Changing packs at the end of every pack may be the cause of you not getting your period. Your body is adjusting to a new pack of pill at the end of every pack. It may take one or two more packs for your body to get adjusted to a pill’s hormones. Try to stick with one pill for 3 months so your body can get adjusted to the pill.

I am on Seasonique- 91 days for the first time after being on the drop shot for 2.5yrs and I am on my 3rd pack (7th month) an have still not had my period. I asked my doctor and she said that it is quite normal for this to occur. The first pack I took actual Seasonique, 2nd packI got Amethia and this pack is now Camrese… Does switching from ran to generic to generic have anything to do with not having a period when scheduled? I am also very active with working out etc that I heard that will sometimes mess w menstrual cycles as well?

Dear Christina,

I would recommend you to continue with Lo Seasonique until you have finished the first pack (3 months worth of pills) because any side effect you think may be from Lo Seasonique should go away. If the nausea continues after being on Lo Seasonique for more than 3 months, talk to your doctor about other birth control methods you can go on.

After 10 years on Loestrin, I have been taking LoSeasonique for 9 days and have had
extreme nausea for the past 3 days. I’ve called my doctor and they say it’s not the med because I would have had the nausea in the first few days of taking the meds.
However, I know my body and really feel that my stomach problems are caused by this med since it is the only thing that has changed.
Has anyone else had this problem? What if I just stop taking it?

I understand your frustration. Girls who start on Seasonique do experience breakthrough bleeding during the first pack (3 months). This is very common and is not abnormal. Your body is adjusting to the pill right now and the breakthrough bleeding is a temporary side effect that should stop by the time you start your next pack. I would advise you to continue taking the pill as normal. The bleeding should slowly diminish until the end of your pack. When you start your new pack, there shouldn’t be anymore bleeding until you are supposed to at the end of the pack (with the inactive pills). If the breakthrough bleeding does continue, talk to your doctor about other birth control pill options.

I have been on Seasonique for a little over a month now. I was put on this birth control to help with the very heavy bleeding and cramping that I experience do to uterine fibroids. I was told by the doctor that I would not have a heavy period but some spotting and or break through bleeding. Since I have started this birth control I have not stopped bleeding and it is light and then heavy. Everyday since i started Seasonique it has been crazy. The only thing the doctor could suggest is giveng me a higher dose but if I take that then it would take more time for my body to adjust to the hormones in it and I would still be bleeding for another month or two. And not come to find out if I stop taking it I will have a notrmal period. So what was all this bleeding for the past month?

Yes, this is normal. Breakthrough bleeding on the first 3 months of Seasonale or it’s generic, Quasense, is very common. You shouldn’t be concerned.

Whenever you miss pills, your risk of pregnancy increases. Wait for your period to come at the end of the pack. If it doesn’t come, take a home pregnancy test. If it is negative, you should be fine. If it is positive, make an appointment with your doctor to get a more accurate test for confirmation.

But I forgot my pills at home when I went away for the weekend and missed two days of pills. I had unprotected sex the the day after missing both days, but I took two pills that third day (on which I had unprotected sex) and the fourth day. What are the chances of me being pregnant.

The pill had prevented you from having your period. You may experience some breakthrough bleeding while starting Seasonique which is normal, but you won’t get your period until 3 months later at the end of your pack. If you are worried you may be pregnant, take a pregnancy test.

Seasonique is an extended cycle pill and breakthrough bleeding is a very common side effect for this pill, especially if you are just starting Seasonique. I would advise you to continue taking the next pack because the breakthrough bleeding should stop now that you are passing your 3 month mark of being on the pill. Although every girl reacts differently to the pill so you just have to be patient with your body as it adjusts. Stress can also cause breakthrough bleeding, so try to not stress out about it too much and let your body figure it out. You should most likely be fine this month, keep us posted

Sounds like your body is getting used to the pill and breakthrough bleeding is very common and does occur for the first 3 months of being on the pill. The spotting should stop by the time you start your next pack. Being on Seasonique, you’ll have to get used to getting your period once every 3 months.

Hi. About a year ago I started taking seasonale. For the 6 months I was on seasonale, I always had my period every month for about 10 days. And then about 3 months ago, my doctor switched me to seasonique. Now I know seasonale and seasonique are probly the same, but the last period i had was on august 31st, which lasted for 10 days. I haven’t had a period since then but for the last two days, i’ve been spotting a lil bit here and there. Is that ok? Could i be getting used to having a period every 3 months?

You may be bleeding for two reasons. 1) Food poisoning where the pills may have been ineffective during that time, and 2) A common side effect of Seasonique where breakthrough bleeding will occur during the first 3 months of being on the pill. I would advise you to continue taking the pill as you normally would. By the third month, your body would have gotten used to the pill and the breakthrough bleeding should stop.

I have been on Seasonique for a full month and a half now, but last Saturday I contracted food poisoning and missed/immediately threw up for 3 days of the pills. So, I took two pills each time I took my next three(which is what it said on the packet info). I have now been on my period since last Tuesday and it is now late Monday/early Tuesday morning. It varies from spotting to a heavy flow throughout the day and I’m just wondering what I should do. Thank you so much for you help in advance.

If you are not taking any other medications that may also be causing these side effects, then it may be from the pill. Since this is the first month on the generic pill, just like any other pill, the side effects may go away after the 3rd month on the new pill. Continue taking the pill as you normally would and see if the side effects are gone after finishing the 3rd pack of the generic pill. If the side effects persists on the 4th pack, make an appointment with your doctor to discuss the side effects you are experiencing and if he/she can prescribe you to something else.

Seasonique recently came out with a generic counterpart, camrese. I had to switch to this because insurance stops paying for brand name when there’s a generic. About a day after starting my third pack (first one on the generic pill)I started to experience some odd side effects. I’ve been slightly nauseous for about three weeks. When I get hungry my stomach feels like it’s filled with stomach acid and is ready to come up, but i also get sinus pressure around my cheek bones when I get that nauseous feeling, a headache, a feeling of if I would just throw up, I’d feel better and feel like Im running a fever, almost like a hot flash. Everyone says the generic is the same as the name brand pill, but it seems coincidence that this started happening when I started camrese. So the question is: do any of those side effects sound like they’d be caused by the bc?

You started the pill 6 days after your last period and had only taken the pill for 3 days, I would recommend you to use back up contraception (ie. condoms or spermicide) during this first month of being on the pill. I just want to eliminate the option that you may be pregnant before even starting the pill. If you are confident that you were not pregnant before starting the pill, then maybe your body is probably still adjusting to the pill and you may not get your next period until the end of the next pack.

I really need help. I was on Seasonique for over a year and had absolutely no problems, no breakthrough bleeding (not even in the beginning). And by the way my periods lasted the whole seven days, not 4. Until I was on it for about a year I started bleeding every two weeks, very light but I didn’t get why it was happening. This was supposed to happen in the beginning but I was already on it for a long time. My doctor tested my blood but found nothing wrong, then took me off Seasonique and on to a regular bc to stop the bleeding. After I stopped I went back on to Seasonique but then it happened again later. About a month ago I started on Errin (mini pill) because my doctor said it’s supposed to get rid of my periods completely. She said in the first two months i’m supposed to get breakthrough bleeding, which I did last week. I’m really hating this pill so far because I have really bad side effects like bad cramping even when I’m not bleeding, hair loss, and really bad headaches. And I just feel tired and sick all the time. I basically have no other choices because my doctor said other pills that have the same dosage as seasonique will do the same thing that seasonique did and there isn’t anything else I can do. I really want to go back on seasonique becasue it did well for me, or even another one like seasonique but I don’t know if it will be any different this time????

I experienced ridiculous amounts of spotting during the first three weeks of taking it. It was as inconvenient as actually menstruating, for three weeks. I very nearly gave it up, but I decided to give it a little more time. Good thing I did, the spotting stopped entirely in the fourth week, quite abruptly, and I haven’t had any problems at all. With all birth control, a little patience can be the key.

My last period was april 3rd-7th and I went tO the doctor April 14th and she said to finish the first week of my current pills then start takin the seasonique on Sunday. So I started it two Sunday’s after my last period. I take seasonique daily but it’s hard for me to take it at the same time every day because of work. I just recently started having sex for the first time and the other night my bf and I had unprotected sex and he pulled out before he came. But should I be worried about possibly becoming pregnant?

I mentioned before in an earlier post about how I started my first three month pack right after a different form of birth control instead of waiting for my period to come, then starting the following sunday and I spotted almost consistently throughout those three months. I had my period week like you said, and started my second three month pack on the sunday after. That was last sunday, I’m on my second week now and have not had any break through bleeding, I have missed my pill on two days by a half hour to an hour but still did not bleed. Im just wondering if it’s normal that im not breaking through or spotting. I’ve heard you’re supposed to for the first two months.

If you started the first pack of your pills the Sunday during or right after your period then you do not need protection. If you didn’t, then I would continue to use back up contraception till the end of the second pack. Do not skip period week. Continue to take the pills everyday at around the same time every day as you normally would.

The dates on the pack is to help you remember whether or not you missed a pill. I would not recommend you to start right away (ie. today) because not only will the pack not match the dates, but more importantly, during the first month of being on the pill, you will need back up contraception (ie. condoms, spermicide, etc) to prevent pregnancy as well. I would recommend you to start your pill on the Sunday when you are on your period or just after your period. This way you will be fully protected and will not need back up contraception (except for the first couple of week of being on the pill in case you forget any pills) and that is also the best time for the pills to regulate your hormones.

I would advise you to wait to see your gyno first, but if you are sexually active now and need to get on birth control then do the following:
1) Check the expiry date on those birth control pills from your old package to see if you can still use them.
2) If you are very sure that you are going to stay on that same pill and not try new pills, then you can start with your old pack. Make sure that they are not expired. When you do get your new pack, throw away your old pack and punch out the amount of pills you have taken so far that month on your new pack, and then continue on with the new pack.

If you are sexually active, you would need to not only take the birth control pills, but also use back up contraception (ie. condoms or spermicide) in the first 2-3 weeks of starting the pills.

A very common side effect of seasonique is the breakthrough bleeding. You will notice this for the first 3 months of the pill. Your body is adjusting to these pills that’s why you are noticing the bloating, tiredness, tender breasts, breakthrough bleeding, etc. Let us know how you feel after the 1st pack (3 months). If you stop taking them for a week, yes, you will get your period, but I would suggest you to stay on the pill for the first 3 months first so your body gets adjusted to it first and when you come to the end of the pack, you get your 1 week period.

I am just starting my yellow pills after my first cycle of Seasonique and I’m really enjoying light flow and no cramps. I just realized that my next period is going to occur while I’m participating in a 500 mile bike ride. I would prefer not to be bicycling with a pad or tampons if possible. My question is, can I bring a new pack with me, skip the yellow pills that week and keep taking the green from the new pack, then take the yellow a week later when I’m done biking to have a period? I switched from NuvaRing to seasonique back in march, the Dr said since i was on the ring, i didnt need a back up form, but that i should take it out, start my period, and then start the pills the following sunday, but i took the pills the 13th. took the ring out the night before and took my first pill in the morning, without having my period. I had no symptoms the first week, then started BTB the rest of the month, like heavy sometimes and then really light. Then about last sunday it stopped. I get a spot here and there but thats it, I’ve also noticed tender breasts and a slight bloating feeling during the day and some tiredness now and then. Is that normal? And if I stop taking them for a week, before the white pills, will i get my period on my own?

For the first three months of being on Seasonique, you will have break through bleeding. One of this pill’s known side effect is break through bleeding so you have to be ready for it. I would suggest you stay on it for the first 3 months because once you get past that initial phase of being on the pill, things will only get better (ie. no more break through bleeding!). If the break through bleeding continues while you are on your 4 or 5th month, then check with your doctor. Tough it out for the first 3 months!

ok so Ive taken birth control before, but it didn’t help with my period at all. it only made it worse. I bled for three months straight and it wasn’t just btb, it was like my period every single day for three months. I got a three monto small of seasonique from my doctor and I was wondering if the same thing would happen to me again. I’m really nervous about taking it. I don’t need it for a contraceptive because I’m only 15, it’s just for my period and acne. i don’t know if I should take it or not. Can you please help me?

Dear Leena,

It is very common for girls to spot during the first 3 months of being on Seasonique. Since you started the pill mid December the spotting may or may not stop by feb 5th (because you are at the end of the 3 month pack, your body may have adjusted to the pill by then and the spotting may stop). You can either go see your doctor and get a prescription for another low dose pill or stay on this pill and the spotting may stop. If you decide to try another pill, you may experience other side effects during the first 3 months of that pill as well.

Dear CC,

On your first pack of Seasonique, spotting is a very common side effect for girls starting on Seasonique. Continue taking the pill until the pack is done. You may be spotting all the way until the end of the pack where you should get your real period on the last week of your pills. When you start the next pack (this should be your 4th month on the pill) your spotting should stop entirely and you should not be bleeding until you are on the sugar pills. If the bleeding continues on your new pack, make an appointment with your doctor and explain to him/her your situation.

I’ve been on Seasonique for 2.5 months. I started my period early 2 weeks ago & am still on it. I haven’t even gotten to my ‘reminder’ pills yet & I’ve been on an unscheduled period for 2 weeks. Do I stop taking Seasonique? Or just continue with my regular pills in hopes that it will soon stop? Not sure how long to put up with it. Spotting/breakthrough bleeding during your first pack of seasonique is totally normal. Once you start your second pack, you shouldn’t be bleeding for the next 3 months, although spotting/breakthrough bleeding is a very common side effect for seasonique. If the bleeding doesn’t stop on your next pack or the pack after that, make an appointment with your doctor and talk to him/her about other birth control options.

I started seasonique 3 months ago. I got my period every month, which I think is probably normal since I just started it. The last month I got my period for 2 weeks. You are not supposed to get your period until the sugar pills but some girls who start taking it experience breakthrough bleeding/spotting the few months of being on the pill because their bodies are adjusting to it. Take them and see what happens. The worst that can happen is that you get your period, but if you don't take it you get your period anyway so you don't have much to lose. As long as you did not miss any pills, the likelihood of you becoming pregnant is very slim.The cramping, nausea, and back ache you are experiencing may be something else. You should talk to your doctor about it because it can be an infection of some sort or you can be getting the flu. Your doctor would be able to diagnose that correctly. Just to make sure you are not pregnant, wait until you are supposed to get your period. If your period comes, then you are not pregnant for sure. My boyfriend and I had sex on Thursday without a condom and when he came he came inside of me. You should also keep your pills in the birth control blister pack it comes in, because that helps you keep track of which day you have taken your pill and which day you have missed a pill. I started taking seasonale five years ago. About a year after I was on it, I was switched to seasonique and have been on it ever since. In late July I had to have a colposcopy without a biopsy, which came back normal. I never miss a pill. Ever since then I have been having breakthrough bleeding. Hey Debs,If the nausea and dizziness really bothers you, make sure you are taking your two pills at a different time of day from each other or else the nausea and dizziness will get even worse. For example, if you normally take your pill at 8am, then take one at 8am and then take the other one on the same day at 8pm.

Hey Debs,When you go off the pill, you will most likely get your period. From my personal experience, when first going off the Pill the body can take some time to adjust. This can include heavy or no bleeding and longer or shorter periods. It can be a bit of a guessing game! Keep an eye on things and make a point of telling your doctor everything you've experienced. You should go see your doctor to see what he/she would suggest for you.

These two birth control have different dosages, so if it is not the same pack, then that could be why you missed your period. If they are the same pack, missing your period is not a sign of cancer. If you miss your period again, take another pregnancy test and see your doctor to get another exam done.

My MD put me on the pack after surgery for endometriosis. I did well the first three weeks but my breast really hurt. After the breast pain stopped, I did really well then started to spot. The doctor told me to double up on the pills which made it worse. Now instead of spotting a few hours out of everyday, it's a continuous dark flow. I have non-stop cramping and Advil doesn't work. This pill has taken my energy, my sleep, my libido and my happiness. A doctor and friend who lives in Phoenix had the same problems and stopped the pack immediately. I am also stopping the pack. If it works for you then wonderful, but for the small percentage out there that is having a hard time (I think there will be more) ask your doctor for something else. I am worried about the long term effect it will have on me once I stop taking it.

I have been on Seasonique for 4 months now. I had previously been on another bc for 18 years but started getting menstrual migraines. My dr. put me on this one– no problem the first three months. After my period I was good for 2 weeks and then I had spot bleeding for 2 weeks. Finally stopped for a week but it is now back again. I feel like I am going crazy!! Called the dr. and she said this in normal side effect for up to a year. I am just not sure whether I should get another opinion or stick it out for awhile. I can’t do this for another 6 months. Never had problems like this b/f. I take the pill at the same time every day. Any suggestions??

I lasted just over 6 months on Seasonique. For the whole first 3 months I bled, itched all over and had very bad nasuea. But I stuck it out. Then the bleeding stopped with my first period on the pill and my acne had cleared up. But when I got my second period I sobbed the whole week and stopped sleeping more than a few hours a night. I got insomnia and panic attacks and high blood pressure and finally quit. I’ve looked on many bulletin boards and I’ve seen multiple accounts of the exact same reaction, so heads up. I know it may be a small percentage, but heads up for these symptoms. I’ve been off for 2 months and I still have hypertension (never have had raised blood pressure), heart palpatations, and rapid weight loss. If you get insomnia or big moods swings on this pill…stop!

I’m on week 12 of Seasonique… This is the first time I’ve ever tried birth control piils. I’ve always had heavy, long periods, but they got a little worse after my 2nd child was born. So I started Seasonique and it was great the first 11 weeks… I noticed that I was moody the first few days, but fine after that. No spotting or anything out of the ordinary. But then I started bleeding in week 11. I’ve had a steady flow for about 7 days now, but not the severe cramping that I used to get before taking Seasonique. I just went to see my OB/GYN two days ago and she said this bleeding was normal as my body is getting used to the drug. Other than feeling bloated and bleeding for the past few days, Seasonique has been problem-free for me. I just wanted to share my story…

I’ve always had horrible periods and painful ovarian cysts, and Seasonique has been the only birth control pill to work for me. However, I am noticing it’s side-effects. When I do have a period, it’s rough and lasts for quite a while, but considering it’s not often – I’m willing to put up with it for the benefits of not having ovarian cyst troubles. Also, I get very dizzy from time to time and can hardly move without ‘turning green’. All and all Seasonique is only worth the side-effects because it works for me. I’m not sure I would recommend it to anyone that didn’t have my problems.

Seasonique is an extended-cycle pill that results in you getting only 4 periods a year – it is not meant to stop your period completely. Seeing that this is your first time using this pill your body is probably adjusting to the extra hormones, which can result in a longer period and some pesty side effects (not unlike PMS symptoms). If things persist, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor’s office and ask them what’s up.

I started seasonique 3 weeks ago and everything seem to be fine. For those who are having side effects, be reminded that everyone responds differently to medications, so if this doesn’t work, then try another bc. I take my pills at the same time every morning. I set my phone to wake me up…I was on Yaz for almost a year and it worked for the first few months, after that, I was having all sorts of mood swings…I thought I was going crazy…then the acne came back, I was crying for no reason, I had constant headaches, vaginal dryness, I had no sex drive, ugh… after taking the Seasonique, all that stopped. I now have a wonder and high sex drive. I am keeping a journal so that I can take to my Dr. if anything changes.I can say that so far I like this BC. Not sure what will happen later on.

I just got off Seasonique after trying it since May.. This last cylce was the final stra– I had a period for 4 weeks. Just had an IUD inserted today. Hope this works better– I do not use this for BC. I’m 44, non smoker, 1 child age 7.I did not take any birth control since I was 25. I quit ovulating this year or last. Started on Seasonique August this year. Went through the side effects and got over it. Now am having an extremely heavy period with heavy clots and have been for almost 2 weeks. Bad cramps too.I’m only on my 3rd month second row of pills now.Should I be concerened with the heavy heavy period? I’m on week 8 of seasonique, and I’ve experienced lots of spotting, some depression, and this weekend I’ve been having some blood flowing like it’s my period, even today which is freaking me out, could it be caused I’m also taking some antibiotics and other vitamins supplements? I think I’m going to stop once I get to the week 13 but I’ll talk to the doctor about it first. My main reason for taking this was to have less period since I have pretty painful ones.

I started seasonique 10 weeks ago. It worked great for the first 2 weeks after that I started having btb. For the last 8 weeks it has gotten progresively worse. Know i am bleeding like a heavy period. The upside of it is that i mentally feel better and I haven’t been having cramps. I honestly am fed up with this pill. I take it at the same time every day and I haven’t missed pills. I decided three days ago to quit taking it and now i am really paying the price. I have cramps, headache, backache the whole nine yards. I don’t know if I should just start taking it again and try to ride it out or switch to some thing diffrent. The bad thing is I am only taking it to get relief from bad Menstrual cycles. I don’t need it for birth control. So i am definately torn between what to do.

As pointed out by one of our readers, the “reminder” pills contain a very low dose of the hormone ethinyl estradiol. This helps with pms symptoms and makes for a shorter pill period. It’s probably a good idea to keep taking them as usual. Of course, you can always ask your healthcare professional for their medical opinion.:-)

Seeing that you’ve only been taking the pill for a short time, the lack of period could just be your body still adjusting to the hormones. However, if you feel comfortable, it’s probably a good idea to take a pregnancy test, just to be sure that it’s not the culprit behind your lack of period.Hopefully this helps.:-)

Unfortunately nausea is just one of those pesky side effects that comes with taking the pill. Your body requires roughly 1-3 months to adjust to the new hormones, so you may experience the nausea for a little while longer.:-)

Your body needs time to adjust to the pill – usually about two weeks to a month – so to be on the safe side use a condom and spermicide.

Hi,I’m new to Seasonique, I’m on my second week taking it. I’m taking it because I suffer from severe migraine headaches a few days before, all the way through and a few days after my cycle. So this is supposed to help me by only getting 4 a year. My question is, does anyone else get really dizzy from it? I’m going to call my doctor tomorrow but thought to check out a few websites first. I used to play with the start date of my pill all the time (before I was sexually active and just taking it to regulate my period). But I can’t recommend that for you – So why not call your doctor’s office and see what they say about starting it early? You never know, you just may be able to enjoy that vacation after all! yes this is the first time i am taking the pill. my period is usually all over the place. sometimes skipping a month or not. it’s very unpredictable. i just read about seasonique and saw that you’re not supposed to get the period until around the last week of the third month.that’s why i was hoping, if i started it early enough, my body might recognize it and put it off! hahai guess i am out of luck then eh?

**Do not stop taking your pill.** Spotting (light bleeding) is a common side effect when you first start using the pill – some women experience spotting even if they’ve been taking OC’s for years – but it seems like you know this already. I think you have nothing to worry about, but you sound concerned, so make an appointment to see your doctor and see what he/she has to say. Hopefully this helps

i have just started using seasonique and my doctor told me to start the day my period starts, it started on a sunday so i took the pill, now its been three weeks later, and im still bleeding…i do not get it? i know my body has to adjust but would it be better to just stop taking it til i stop bleeding then pick it back up? because it seems like im gettin no relief from bleeding, i constantly have to have a panty liner or tampon in….help please!

Starting on the 3rd day of bleeding? I’ve never heard that before, but your doctor must have a reason for suggesting this. So start on the 3rd day, but in the meantime call your doctor’s office and ask why. There’s no harm in finding out more information – it is your body.

I’ve been taking seasonique for 3 weeks now. I can already feel some side effects. The first one I noticed was intense breast tenderness, but its getting better with time. The second was nausea. Your information about Seasonique is wrong on this web site. The last row of pills DO contain hormones in them. 0.01 mg of ethinyl estradiol. A very low dose to help with pms symptoms and for a shorter pill period.it is SEASONALE that does not contain hormones in the last pill row. Just wanted your readers to get the correct information.

I recently started birth control last week, and I was told by my doctor to take it on the sunday after I start my period (like everyone is told). I didn’t start my period before Sunday, but started on Monday, but I needed the effectivness as soon as possible, so I took it anyway on Sunday even though I didn’t start my period yet. anon #2 – according to my sources you should take the first pill on the first Sunday after your period begins, even if you are still bleeding. If your period starts on Sunday, take the first birth control pill that day. Use a condome anytime you have sex for the first 7 days you take the pills.
