What happens if I miss a pill?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 9:24 am

We all get busy and sometimes remembering to take the pill is at the back of our minds – until it’s 4am and that light goes off! “What do I do now?”

Panicking about missing a pill all depends on which one you forget to take. The “active” pills may not be as effective in preventing pregnancy if you miss the first few or last few pills in a pack. If you miss the “reminder” pills there’s no need to worry because this is when you get your period – although, for peace of mind, don’t be afraid to use a back-up method like a condom.

What to do if you miss your “active” birth control pills

  • Take the pill as soon as you remember then take the next pill at your usual time. Unfortunately this means you may have to take 2 pills in 1 day and you may experience nausea.
  • If you miss 2 active pills in a row in Week 1 or Week 2 take 2 pills on the day you remember and 2 pills the next day. Then follow through with 1 pill a day until the pack is finished. Pregnancy may not be prevented if you have sex during the 7 days after you restart your birth control pills. Use a condom or another method of non-hormonal birth control as a back-up for those 7 days.
  • If you miss 2 active pills (in a row) in Week 3 there’s two things you can do and those depend on when you started your pack. If you started on Day 1 of your period throw out the rest of the pack and start a fresh one that same day. If you started your pill pack on a Sunday keep taking 1 pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack of pills that same day. You may not get your period this month. Here again the risk of pregnancy is high so use a condom or spermicide for the first 7 days after you start taking the new pill pack.
  • If you miss 3 or more active pills in a row (during the first 3 weeks) and you started taking the pill on Day 1 of your period throw out the rest of your pack and start with a fresh one that same day.
  • If you forget to take any of the reminder pills in Week 4 just throw out the pills you missed. Keep taking 1 pill each day until the pack is finished.

  1. Ok I have a question if anyone has an answer:I am relatively new to the birth control thing. I have been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for a month now. Well my period came 2 days before I was supposed to start the placebo pills, therefore it will end only a day into the placebo pills (my period is usually short)So should I continue with the rest of the 6 placebo pills or start a new pack instead of even starting the placebo pills? The reason for this is my boyfriend is coming in a few days and I want to make sure we are as protected as possible. So if I am done with my period but still on the placebo pills won’t it be similar to skipping a pill therefore making me more susceptible to pregnancy??Thanks!!

  2. “So if I am done with my period but still on the placebo pills won’t it be similar to skipping a pill therefore making me more susceptible to pregnancy??”It’s not similar to skipping a pill. If you are taking the Pill correctly and consistently everyday you are 99% protected. I think it would be best for you to keep taking your reminder (placebo) pills then start your new pack as usual. If you don’t feel confident about being protected use a secondary birth control method like a condom or spermicide.Hopefully that helps!

  3. i have a couple of questions. first, does cipro react with BCPs at all? also, i skipped 2 pills in my pack around the 14th day of the pack. i’ve read that that is around the time a woman ovulates. when i’m off the pill, i have the most irregular period. so when i’m on the pill do i ovulate regularly? i’m wondering if my odds are high of getting pregnant. i’ve had sex twice with no backup method during this week of the 14th day. thanks!

  5. Anonymous from Sept.06/07 – First off sorry it took so long to reply. There are certain antibiotics which doctors say can cause decreased effectiveness. Antibiotics that are listed as interfering include:Rifampin Penicillin Amoxicillin Sulfonamide Ampicillin Cotrimoxazole Tetracycline Griseofulvin Minocycline Phenobarbitol Metronidazole NitrofurantoinCipro doesn’t appear to be on the list but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t still affect your birth control. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Use a condom or spermicide during the run of your antibiotic and make sure to continue for one week afterwards.

  6. I took the first grey “active pill” a few hours late, because i forgot to pick up a new pack. Later that week, after taking the pills at the correct time each day, i had sex. We were using a condom, but it broke ad we never finished. Later on, we went at it again, this time without a condom, but he pulled out before he came. The next morning, i woke up late and took the pill a few hours late. I was just wondering if this could cause me to get pregnant?

  7. Ok so I’m on the pill. In Nov of 08 I forgot to take it for 3 days in the 2nd week and got my period. On the first day I got my period I had unprotected sex. I have gotten my period every month since, and have take 1-2 HPT’s every week (I know obessive) and they are all negative. I have also been to the doctor in Feb. Would I be in the cleaR?

  8. If you’ve had your period every month since last November, and all the home pregnancy tests have come back negative (plus the test administered by your doctor), then it’s probably safe to assume you’re not pregnant. Of course, if you still feel uncertain, make an appointment with your doctor for another test.

  9. I take my pills in the morning when I wake up and I start each pack on Sunday. I forgot to take it Sunday, Monday, and then didn’t remember Tuesday’s until later in the day. So I took all 3 at once. This was the week right before I was supposed to start my sugar pills (week before my regular period). On Wednesday I got my period (a week early). I kept taking my pills for the rest of the week, and then on the following Sunday instead of taking the sugar pills I started a new pack. Today when I got home from work I bled and still am a bit now. Am I getting my period twice and is there anyway to stop it? What should I have done different? (not including missing the 2.5 pills)

    Comment by Anonymous — July 23, 2008 @ 4:14 pm

  10. It sounds like you did the right thing by continuing on with a new pack. If you are getting your period twice (although this “second” period may just be light spotting), I don’t think there’s a way to stop it. You’ll have to let your body get back on course – which it will – by taking your pills everyday as usual. If they don’t resume, please don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or a healthcare professional at your local walk-in clinic.:-)

  12. There is a chance you could get pregnant. You may want to look into getting the morning after pill for your local Planned Parenthood clinic or pharmacy. Performing a pregnancy test will also give you an answer.

  13. I’ve been taking Ortho-cyclone for about 2 months now. And all month I haven’t missed a day. At the beginning of the month is was a little rocky, but other than that I’ve done fine, taking them every night at 11 to 11:30. Then the other day, I missed my very last pill, right before I’m supposed to start my sugar pills. I ended up taking my last pill on Sunday instead of Saturday. I was supposed to start Sunday, but I haven’t started yet (the same thing happened to me last month, but I did terrible on taking them last month). Can missing one pill, even my last day, throw off my period a little? Or is there a high chance I’m pregnant?

    Comment by Anonymous — October 8, 2008 @ 5:45 am

  14. That’s a good question. If you’ve only been taking it for two months your body is probably still adjusting to the new hormones, so your period being a couple of days late may just be an outcome of this. However (and this is not meant to scare you, just inform you), the pill is 99% effective only when taken correctly and consistently. If you had sex the same day you forgot to take your last active pill I would take a home pregnancy test just to be sure.:)

  15. Thank you. I have a friend who has been taking birth control for over a year and she said that she always starts her period three days after she ends her actual pills. So that made me feel a little better.

  16. Ok, I have been on the pill for a few years now and very good about taking them. I am on my fifth day of my period, basically done with it, and I had sex with my bf today. Tonight was my night to start a new pack of pills. My mom was going to pick up the prescription with hers, but forgot to because she was babysitting for my niece. She is going to pick them up tomorrow. Will I be fine?? Should I take both pills tomorrow – the one I missed today as well?? Thanks!

  17. Take the “forgotten” pill as soon as you can, then take the next pill at your usual time. You’ll probably feel pretty ill seeing that you’re having to double up, but by taking them on the same day you’re getting your routine back on track.

  19. I have been on birth control for about a year and a half now and I forgot to take the first pill in my new pack on Friday night. I realized it on Saturday night when it was time to take that one. I didn’t make up that pill on Saturday because I didn’t even think about having to do that. I have never missed a pill by a full 24hrs. It is now Monday and I didn’t make up that pill because I am not sure about it now. What should I do? Take it now or just forget about that pill and go on with the pills as usual?

I still continued to take the active pills even though i was having my period. After my period ended i had sex with my boyfriend and didn’t use a condom. He didn’t cum in me but i am sure there was pre-cum. When it came time for the placebo pills i took them but didn’t get my period like i was supposed to. I took a test and it was negative. I had to stop taking birth control for insurance pourposes. i don’t know what is wrong? I still haven’t gotten my period. am i pregnant or beings i am not taking my pills anymore making me not have it. I have heard it takes a while sometimes to get your period after being on the pill. 25. Okay a few questions,I’m leaving to visit my boyfriend in a week and I am scheduled to have my period the first few days of my visit. What would happen if I didnt take my sugar inactive pills (I’m on YAZ) and just started a new pack? OR if I skipped taking, say, two sugar pills and began a new pack? Would any of this make my period come sooner? or skip? If not is there any way I can make it so that my period will come sooner? Please reply, i appreciate it!

  34. Hi I have been on the pills for the last 3 years and rarely missed pills. I usually start my packs on a saturday and the last month has been more stressful that I forgot 2 pills in a row in the second week of active pills and only realized it on the day after. I didn’t take 3 pills but I just continued with the rest of the pack. Me and my partner did have unprotected sex once in the following week. My period was suppose to start every monday on the 7 day pill free week but it didn’t. I tried a HPT on the 2nd day of missed period and both the tests are negative. Could I still be pregnant? what should I do now? I haven’t got my periods yet!

  40. So I’ve been taking YAZ for a long time now and quite regularly. I forgot to take my pill on Monday and took two on Tuesday but my boyfriend and I had sex without a condom so we decided to take the morning after pill just in case which I took on Wednesday morning. But then we had sex without a condom again on Thursday night (early Friday AM) and I was wondering if I could get pregnant from that night? I finished my pack for the month and I’m just wondering because Friday starts my placebo week and I didn’t know if that does anything to me. Thank you!

  41. Dear Annonymous,If your period does come on the Friday or Saturday, then you should be safe. Just to be sure you can take a pregnancy test three to four weeks later. Remember, if you do forget to take a pill, take it as soon as you remember that day. If you don’t remember until the next day, skip that pill and continue taking the pill as per your daily dosing schedule.

  44. Dear Anonymous,There is a chance that you could get pregnant. Make sure you fill your prescription before the last week of your current set of pills to make sure you won’t miss a pill. At the moment, you can wait and see if your period comes next month, and if it doesn’t, take a pregnancy test. Or to be safe, you can take a morning after pill today.

I then had sex the day after I started again, but now I stopped my packet 4 pills early and still havnt ‘come on’ after 4 days from the last pill I took, Could I be pregnant or is it just because I stopped takin them early so my body is ‘confused’?!?Any answers would be a great help, thanks x

    Comment by Anonymous — May 21, 2009 @ 3:23 pm

  53. Dear Amanda,Because you just started to take birth control pills, you need to diligently take the pills more or less the same time every day. When you stop taking the pills your body thinks that it is time to menstruate. Just try to remember to take your birth control pills everyday so you won’t get your period. Every time you miss your pill you increase the risk of pregnancy so it is very important to take your pills everyday.

    Comment by Janine — May 21, 2009 @ 5:45 pm

  54. Dear Annonymous,It sounds like your body is confused. When one or more pills are missed, the risk of pregnancy is high. Every time you stop using the pill, make sure you use back up contraception (ie.condom). Also, whenever you have sex and then miss several pills afterwards, it is usually recommended by your doctor to use emergency contraception. Speak to your GP and let him/her know your situation and he/she would be able to tell you what to do.

    Comment by Anonymous — May 26, 2009 @ 7:03 pm

  56. Dear Anonymous,Majority of the girls taking birth control is to prevent themselves from getting pregnant, so if she does miss a pill there is a chance that she will get pregnant. She might be lucky and not get pregnant. If you are trying to get pregnant, being on the birth control might not be a good method. Please speak to your doctor for alternative methods to help you get pregnant. If you are on birth control to regulate your periods so that in the future you can become pregnant, being on birth control is the right method. For more information, please speak to your doctor so you can be informed of the methods to regulate periods, to become pregnant and to prevent pregnancy.

Am i highly likely to become prego?

  64. I have a question as well. I'm on Jolessa and it's the kind that makes you not have your period for 3 months. I've been taking it for about 2 years. I started spotting in the second week of the second month so I stopped taking the pills for a week to get the spotting to stop and have my period early. (MISTAKE!) I started the pills again for two days then had sex. I read online that I was supposed to wait 2 weeks instead. Should I be worried?

    Comment by Jean — July 12, 2009 @ 9:19 am

  65. Dear Jean,When you stop taking the pill, that is when the risk of pregnancy is the highest. You should discuss your situation with your doctor and also do a pregnancy test in a couple weeks (or whenever your doctor advises is the best time to do a pregnancy test).

  67. I should be on week 3 of my pills, but forgot to take my pill this past Saturday (last day of week 2). I forgot to double up on Sunday (beginning of week 3). I then forgot my pill yesterday (Monday) and today (Tuesday) I started my period. Should I just ride it out and start my next pack on Sunday or should I continue taking the pills as if nothing happened?

    Comment by AmyLyn Vause — August 4, 2009 @ 9:52 am

Today is wednesday, August 12th and me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex but he did not "go" in me at all! what should i do?????

    Comment by MARANDA KAYE — August 12, 2009 @ 3:13 pm

  71. Dear Maranda,Well since you took Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday pills on Tuesday, you should take the Wednesday pill and make sure you don't forget anymore pills! Forgetting pills will increase your chance of pregnancy especially when you did not use back up contraception such as a condom. Always use back up contraception if you don't remember taking the pill.

I'm on the first week of the next pack, and it's Saturday. Thursday and Friday I spaced out with taking my pill, and Friday I had unprotected sex (he ejaculated inside me). This morning I had a nightmare and woke up at 5 AM, and I remembered about missing the pills because of the dream. So, I took both Thursday's and Friday's pill at that very second. Now it's 9:30 AM. My friends say I'm still protected because I had over 21 days of active pills in my system. Is this true? Or should I go straight to plan B method?

I woke up in the morning and remembered, so I took both Thursday's and Friday's pill right away. I had unprotected sex on Friday, and today is Saturday.. Do you think I'm safe?My friends tell me that because I missed the two pills on a week that I'd normally be taking placebo pills on, but instead I skipped it for active pills, I'm fine. I am on the week that I am suppose to be getting my period , and I am just scared because last week I was 3 hours late for my pill then the next day, i was in school and did not have water on me so i chewed it. That night I had unprotected sex, but the next day I took it at regular time. Is there a higher risk of me not getting my period this week, and becoming pregnant?

It seems to have stopped, but I'm not quite finished my pack ( I have one more pill) I'm wondering if I should finish this one, wait for my period and start the next or should I just go onto the next one. This light bleeding is also known as spotting and spotting is common amongst girls who have just started using birth control pills. Stay on the birth control for 3 months and see if the spotting continues. Keep your doctor informed about the spotting if the spotting continues after 3 months, your doctor may prescribe you on a different, maybe stronger, pill.Keep us updated :)

  129. I have a question. I have been on TriNessa for 4-5 years now. Never forgotten a pill a whole day. I thought I had taken all my pills as normal till just now when I took tonights pill. I started my pack a week ago. So I had taken Sun – WEd. Had sex thursday morning, went to class and came home and went to bed. Forgot Thursdays pill. Well last night I took the next pill as normal thinking i was on track. Then tonight I noticed and went ahead and took the 2 pills to catch back up. Would I be able to get by…or am I at a high risk? I hope someone can tell me. THanks.~ZOE

  130. I just realized that I am going away in about a month and I will be on my period the whole week I am away. I started my period today and I have missed the first 2 pills in the pack in order to try to miss this period and offset the timing of my next one. This happened because I thought I was okay for timing but realized only today that I was off by a week. Will this actually work? This would mean that while I have my period I would be taking the first week of my pills while catching up on the 2 that I have missed already. Will my period come when I finish my pack like it normally does??? Please help…Thanks!!

When you come back then take your sugar pills, if you have any, if you don't then just don't take the pill for a week after you come back just so you have your period. This way you get your period this month and then next month, it will be either one week early or late. Hope that made sense!

  134. Dear Anonymous,As long as you diligently take your pill on a daily basis you are 99% protected. Taking the pill the same time every day helps you remember to take the pill every day, but if you are an hour or two off, it's okay as long as you have been and will continuously take the pill every day.

Okay this is the start of my second month of using Loestrin, my question is that…I forgot to take my pill on monday or tuesday or wednesday (It was a hectic week and I can't remember which one) in the first week of my new pack and I just realized it 3-5days later on a friday. I took two pills that friday but have had sex every day since tuesday. Is there a possibility i could be pregnant? Should I buy a Plan B?

    Comment by Jenny Montoya — June 13, 2010 @ 11:41 pm

  140. Dear Jenny,

Whenever you miss any pills, you may experience a little bit of bleeding (spotting). This is normal. Continue taking the pills and the spotting should go away. When you have sex, make sure you do use back up contraception such as condoms for the next few days just in case. Better safe than sorry :)

  141. Hi! I’ve been on Yasmin for years. This month, I finished the last pack of my prescription, and I couldn’t reach a doctor who would renew it! So I’ve missed the first 5 days of my new pack. What should I do now : start a new pack with the first pill, or use the same weekly-pattern I used to have and start with the sixth pill tomorrow morning?
Also : I may have intercourse next week (that would be on the second week of the pack). Would that put me at risk for pregnancy?
    Thanks for advising!

  144. Dear Vee,

Sorry for the late reply! If you are more comfortable staying with your weekly pattern, then you should start with the sixth pill tomorrow morning (if you haven’t done so yet or started the new pack, then wait and get back on the weekly pattern to start your pill), but if you don’t really care, then you should start the new pack with the first pill today. Whenever you have missed any pills, always use back up contraceptives when having intercourse because you will definitely be at risk for pregnancy.

There was one day that I forgot, but I just took 2 the next day. I am a Wednesday starter and I did not get my period yet, I am back to the next Wednesday, supposed to start my new pack. Comment by Jessica — July 23, 2010 @ 1:02 pm

  151. Dear Jessica,

Did your period come on time while you were still on the first two packs? If they were, then you should have your period on time. If it was not on time on the first two months, then you most likely will not get it on time this month either. Have you had unprotected sex during the two times you forgot your pills? If you did have unprotected sex and your period doesn’t come when it is supposed to, go get a pregnancy test. If you can give me more information, I can better answer your question.

Can I skip three days between packs?

    Comment by Anna — August 3, 2010 @ 3:05 pm

  153. Dear Anna,

If you prefer to start your pills on a Sunday, then you need to skip 4 days worth of pills so you continue your second pill on the Monday (because you have already taken the first pill on the Wednesday instead of the Sunday). This way, every time you start a new week or pack, you always start on the Sunday. I hope that makes sense. Of course, during the first month of being on Yaz, make sure you use back up contraception (ie. spermicide or condoms). This is especially important while you skip the 4 days because obviously you are not taking birth control pills.

Girls on Loestrin 24 fe are supposed to get their periods once a month that lasts for 3 days. Since June 2-3 was your last period, I am assuming you did not get your period on July 2-3 and August 2 -3. In that case you have missed your period for 2 months while still being on the pills? It sounds like you may be pregnant and should get a pregnancy test.

Hello, I’ve been taking Loestrin 24 FE for about two months now to help with my cramps/irregular menstrual cycle and recently I missed two days (Tuesday and Wednesday, I realized this on Thursday). I took both the Tuesday and Wednesday pill as soon as I realized this. Afraid to take a third pill on Thursday, I held off on the pill until today to take it in the morning and then take my pill for Friday in the night. But I just noticed that I’m spotting. Is this because I missed those two days, or is this natural? And what should I do in the future if this happens again (if I miss two days in a row)?

I am not sexually active at all.

    Comment by Rachel — August 29, 2010 @ 7:27 am

  161. Dear Ali,

Since you missed your period 2 days in a row the bleeding is just breakthrough bleeding. This is normal whenever you miss any pills, so to keep your period regulated don’t forget to take those pills. Whenever you realize you had forgotten 1 or 2 pills, take it right away and then continue on with your pack. Whenever you miss 3 or more pills, take one pill as soon as possible and just continue on the pack.

Wait for your period at the end of the pack/month. If you do get your period, then you are not pregnant. If you do not get your period, go get a pregnancy test and make an appointment with your doctor.

    Comment by Angelica — September 22, 2010 @ 5:14 pm

  166. Dear Angelica,

Is this the first time you are taking birth control pills and this is your first pack of pills? Or have you been on the pill for at least 3 months now? If you had intercourse during that same week you had missed your pills, your risk of pregnancy has increased. Whenever you miss pills, back up contraception such as condoms or spermicide is highly recommended to reduce your risk of pregnancy. Continue taking your pills as you would and wait for your period to come at the end of your pack. If you do get your period then you are not pregnant. You can take a pregnancy test just to confirm. If you don’t get your period, make an appointment with your doctor and take a pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant. Goodluck!

    Comment by Megan — November 2, 2010 @ 5:58 pm

  170. Dear Megan,

Did you forget last Saturday or this coming Saturday’s pill? if it’s last Saturday, then just continue the pack and make sure you use back up contraception for at least a week. If it’s the coming Saturday, and the Saturday pill is an active pill, then take this week’s pill in whatever order you want until you arrive back on Sunday to take Sunday’s pill in correspondence with the day. If it’s this coming Saturday, and the Saturday pill is INACTIVE, then it’s just like as if you missed a pill on Monday then just continue the pack and make sure you use back up contraception for at least a week.

    Hope that helps!

I had unprotected sex 7 days after I started the second pack and am supposed to get my period this week. I just finished my last active pill this past Saturday. I am still waiting for it and am beginning to feel concerned and worried that it hasn’t come yet. I have been exercising and changed my diet as well so I was wondering if maybe that has something to do with it. Is there a large chance that I could be pregnant?

    Comment by Georgina — November 17, 2010 @ 12:36 pm

  172. Dear Georgina,

If you are worried that you are pregnant, take a pregnancy test now. If it’s negative, continue on your next pack and see if you get your period on your third pack. If you do, you’re fine because girls sometimes don’t get their period sometime during the first initial 3 months of being on the pill. If you don’t get your period on your third pack, make an appointment to see your doctor.

If your pregnancy test is positive, make an appointment with your doctor and he/she will give you another pregnancy test just to reconfirm.

  176. Hi Tiger,

As long as you took that pill as soon as you can, and continued to take the pill the following day and the day after, then you should wait 3-4 days after the missed pill to start having sex again. Just in case, you can use back up contraception such as condoms or spermicide. It is important that your doctor who prescribed you the antibiotic that he/she is aware that you are on birth control so that he knows to prescribe you antibiotics that will not interfere with your birth control.

  186. Hi Joe,

Your boyfriend is not supposed to be able to buy birth control from the pharmacy. All birth control is prescription required from a doctor. There is a birth control pill called Yasmin, but not Yasmine. The birth control your boyfriend bought may not be effective because it seems to be a non prescription birth control. I would recommend you to go see your doctor and get a proper pregnancy test and also a prescription to birth control if the pregnancy test came out negative.

  189. Dear Joe,

I do not know where you would be able to find abortion pills. If you know you are pregnant and want an abortion, speak to your doctor to find out about your options.

    Comment by Janine — February 4, 2011 @ 9:30 am

  190. Dear Joe,

You can not take regular birth control, such as Yasmin, after you had unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. If you are sexually active and do not want to get pregnant, you should have seen a doctor for a birth control prescription and have to stay on the pill until you are ready to be pregnant.

If you want to prevent pregnancy after sex, your boyfriend should have bought Plan B within 72 hours after you both had sex. Right now, chances of you being pregnant is 50/50. Speak to a doctor and get a pregnancy test to find out if you are pregnant or not. If you are not pregnant, get a prescription for birth control pills and take it regularly until you are ready to have a baby.

I started to bleed and have killer cramps 5 days ago including today. But I had unprotected sex while I was bleeding..and missed todays pill and yesterdays I start my pack on tuesdays so tomorrow will be the last week of active pills so I missed sundays and mondays..What’s going to happen..

    Comment by Morgan — February 14, 2011 @ 9:35 pm

  192. Hi Morgan,

Double up on your pill today for the missed pills from yesterday and the day before. Use back up contraception for the next week. Continue taking your birth control pill every day. If your period comes at the end of your new pack, you are not pregnant. If you do not get your period at the end of your next pack, make an appointment with your doctor to get a pregnancy test taken.

I am not sure why you are bleeding in the middle of the pack. It depends on which pill your doctor prescribed you because some pills may cause bleeding in the initial three month try out phase. You could also be bleeding because you missed pills or that you are taking antibiotics that effects the pill. I would advise you to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss these symptoms you are experiencing (bleeding and cramps) along with your missed pill situation. Your doctor may get you to take a pregnancy test as well.

    Goodluck.

I am on birth control (loestrin 24 fe) when I started my first pack I didn’t start it on my period like most do, because my doctor told me to start it the next Sunday since I wouldnt have a period that month (I only have periods everyother month). I took the pill everyday within the hour of 10 pm. I got my period about a week before my placebo pills (which would have been my period if I wasn’t on bc) then when I got to my placebo pills I got my period again and that. Only lasted as long as I had the brown pills. When I should have started the next pack on Sunday I did not have my pills since there was a mix up with my meds at the pharmacy. But when I got my pills on Monday I took the one I missed as soon as I got them at 9pm and then took the other at. My normal 10pm time. I have now started the 4th day (10pm tonight) of the second week of the second pack ( I start the weeks on sundays and it is now wednesday) am I protected to have sex and it effectivly work as a bc? Ps I will use condoms either way I just want the extra protection to be as sure as possible while having sex. Thanks in advance :)

You are definitely protected with the birth control pills you are taking every day as well as using condoms as a back up contraceptive.

  195. Okay, I’m on the ortho tri-cyclen lo. I have been taking these pills more than 3 months. Which I started about..December. Well, February 14th, I had sex for the first time in 8 months. When we started, he didn’t use a condom but didn’t cum inside until he put a condom on and then came inside. About 8 days when my period stopped (in February),I had already used the last of my pills (Which I started my period on the 4th of Feb and ended about the 10th or 11th) and I started taking them exactly on February 14th after I had sex and gotten them refilled. I don’t usually start til the next month (This month now) which would be March 4th. And it’s been about..2 days now and I have about one more light blue pill left and 7 reminder pills. I sometimes feel nauseated and I have been feeling some cramps in my lower area. I’m really not ready to have a kid..So, I was curious, is starting the pills late can cause the period to start late? It’s been driving me nuts and a sooner response will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Comment by Amanda — March 6, 2011 @ 12:00 pm

  196. Dear Amanda,

If you started your pills in December (from what you wrote I gather you started on Dec 4) you are ending your 3rd pack of ortho tri-cyclen lo. This means you are still in the try out phase of these pills. The nausea and cramping should go away on your 4th pack. Talk to your doctor if these side effects continue on your 4th and 5th pack of pills.

Starting your pills late will definitely delay your period. The blue pills are hormones that works to prevent you from getting pregnant and regulates your menstrual cycle, therefore you will not get your period while you are on the blue pills. The reminder pills are pills with no hormones which is when you are supposed to get your period.

    Comment by Erin — March 11, 2011 @ 3:37 am

  199. Dear Erin,

    For future references:
    1) When you realized that you have missed a pill, take it right away if you remembered it the next day. Also, you would need to use back up contraception in case you didn’t remember you forgot the pill until afterward.
    2) Before you get prescribed any medication from your doctor, let him/her know you are on birth control so he/she can prescribe you a medication that will not interact with your birth control. The reason why you got your period early is because of the Amox-Clav your doctor prescribed you. While you are on this medication, you HAVE TO use back up contraception (ie. condoms or spermicide) because Amox-clav decreases the effectiveness of birth control.

If you have been sexually active during the times you missed the pill or while you are on Amox-Clav or both, chances of you becoming pregnant is very high. If you don’t get your period next month, take a pregnancy test.
    Goodluck!

  200. So, I missed the first 2 pills on the 3rd week of taking Yaz birth control, it’s my first month taking them and I’m kind of upset that it says to throw that pack out and start a new one that day I don’t like the idea of wasting the rest of the pack and not being up to start a new pack when I get my period (like its throwing everything off schedule) What should I do?

    Comment by Amber — March 27, 2011 @ 8:49 am

  201. I am fairly new to birth control (at the end of the 2ns month) and I haven’t had my period yet. The first month I had my period two days before the placebo pills and ended it two days into them. I accidentally missed one pill this month, but doubled up the follqoing night. Have I not had my period yet because my body is still adjusting? Or am I pregnant? :/ please help meee

    Comment by Help — March 29, 2011 @ 11:59 pm

  202. Dear Amber,

We do recommend you to throw away the pack because when you miss 2 or more pills on the third week, it is treated as though you have stopped taking the pill and is therefore not protected from pregnancy anymore especially if you have had sex five days before forgetting your pills. When you start your new pack, you need to take an emergency contraception (ie. Plan B) as well as back up contraception (ie. Condoms or spermicide) for the first week of the new pills to ensure that you do not get pregnant.

    Comment by Janine — March 30, 2011 @ 10:56 am

  203. Dear Help,

You may not have had your period because of the birth control pill. Continue taking the pills as you normally would and see if you get your period next month. If you don’t take a pregnancy test. Hope this helps.

    Comment by leslie — March 30, 2011 @ 7:16 pm

  205. Dear Leslie,

I’m not sure what you mean by not following your regular routine. Does that mean that you did not start your new pack until march 22? When did you had unprotected sex? Sorry, I can’t give you much advice because the information you provided was unclear. If you are worried, take a pregnancy test and if it is positive, see your doctor for a more accurate test – if negative continue on your pills until your next period. If you don’t get your next period, make an appointment with your doctor for another pregnancy test.

I forgot to take my tablet on Wednesday night and remembered when i went to take tonights tablet. I have taken the missed tablet and tonights but the only problem is my boyfriend and I had sex about 10 minutes before i remembered! Am i going to be ok if I use a condom for the next 7 days? Thanks

    Comment by Law — March 31, 2011 @ 3:30 pm

  207. I’m a little confused as to what to do because of which pills I missed. Okay, first two weeks if I miss two it’s business as usual, just take the missed pills; third week it’s one a day then skip my period week and start a new pack. But I forgot Saturday and Sunday’s pills – I still have 6 pills left. Is this week 2 or week 3? I’ve got a bit of spotting so far but nothing crazy. Do I give myself that 7-day break (after these remaining pills) or start the new pack right after they’re done?

    Comment by Susan — April 4, 2011 @ 2:32 pm

  208. Dear Law,

That is correct! If you missed one more more pills during the first week, we would advise you to take Plan B as well as using a condom for the following 7 days. If you are worried, wait for your period to come at the end of the pack. If it does come, you are fine. If it doesn’t, take a pregnancy test. If it is positive, make an appointment with your doctor to get another more accurate test.

    Comment by Janine — April 4, 2011 @ 6:02 pm

  209. Dear Susan,

I am not sure if you just started on these pills, or if you have been on them for awhile now. When in doubt, start a new pack and try not to miss any pills because your risk of pregnancy is highest whenever you miss pills.

    Comment by Janine — April 4, 2011 @ 6:09 pm

  210. Janine,

Whoops sorry, forgot to mention that! I’ve been on them for about three years now. So a new pack right after this one is finished, skip the period?

  211. I am taking my DATs (dental admissions test) for dental school May 28th. As this is a very important exam, I do not want to experience my menstrual cycle full of unbearable cramps/ bloating/ etc. during this week. Despite knowing how BCP works (estrogen, progesterone, LH, FSH…), I would like a second opinion as to when I should start my triphasic pack (I have not been on BCP since 01-11). My LMP was March 23-30 and I would like to know if I should: A) have my period normally this month (which may or may not fall on the 23rd) & then start the 1st pill the 1st day of my period (“normal” & therefore futile unless I start before 4-21) or B) start the pills this Sunday, 4-10, which I should then have my period during the 1st week of May ( >21 days later during the placebo sugar pills) or C) start Sunday, 4-10, and instead of taking the placebo pills, I just start immediately on the 2nd pack (5-1) and then skip placebo pills for the 2nd pack and start on the 3rd pack on May 22nd? I am currently opting for B), but any feedback/corrections or other advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I do apologize for the long post, but I feel that the details may help someone help me. Thanks!

    Comment by Christine — April 6, 2011 @ 8:41 am

  212. Dear Christine,

To avoid your period during that week, you can either take the set of sugar pills before or after that crazy week. In other words you have the option of getting your period the week before or the week after the week you are trying to avoid. Just start taking the sugar pills when you want to get your period and you won’t have to worry about anything but your exam and to remember to take the pill. Goodluck on your DATs!

    Comment by Janine — April 7, 2011 @ 11:58 am

    Comment by kate — April 11, 2011 @ 5:40 pm

  216. Dear Kate,

You won’t be pregnant, because you did remember to take it sometime that day. If you actually missed that day and a few more days after that you realized you have missed several pills after you had sex, then yes you may be pregnant. As long as you continue to take the pill everyday and at around the same time every day, you should be protected from pregnancy. Once you start missing pills, the chances of you becoming pregnant is highest.

On the 13th of April, i started very light spotting that lasted 8 days and then on the 22nd, I started cramping and what appeared to be my normal period came on, but it’s still very light. It seemed 2 days later that the bleeding was stopping, but felt cramping again and still see blood when i wipe, but not a lot on sanitary napkin. I feel like I will nvr stop bleeing. I’m glad it’s light bleeding, but how long will it last?

    Comment by Trice — April 24, 2011 @ 6:42 pm

  219. Dear L,

During those seven days, you should have used back up contraception such as condoms or spermicide. To be safe, you could have continued to use back up contraception for another day as well.

To find out if you are pregnant, you should wait till the end of the pack to see if you get your period. If you don’t, take a home pregnancy test first. If it is negative you are fine, but you can also go to your doctor and get a more accurate pregnancy test if you are worried. If the HPT is positive, definitely check in with your doctor to get a more accurate pregnancy test.

    Comment by Janine — April 27, 2011 @ 10:35 am

  220. Dear Trice,

When switching pills, you should first finish the pack you are currently on, have your period like you normally would first and then start taking the new pack of pills. Your body may be confused with the different hormones that it was getting from the first set of pills and then the second set. It normally takes your body 2-3 months to get used to a pill, so your breakthrough bleeding may stop by the 3rd month. Definitely stay on this pill until you have finished the 3rd pack. If you are still experiencing breakthrough bleeding while on the 4th pack, make an appointment with your doctor and let him/her know what is going on.

    Comment by Itzel — May 3, 2011 @ 10:14 am

  222. Dear Itzel,

When you say you started the pills, how long has it been since you started? If it’s within the first pack, then I would advise you to take plan b as well as use back up contraception until you are 2-3 weeks into your first pack just to be safe. If you have been on the pill for over a month, then you continue to take the pill the same time everyday after you had unprotected sex and you should be fine.

  223. I have been taking BC for about 25 years. I have never had any problems about forgetting to take my pills until recently (2x in the past couple of months). I know it’s because of a new medication so it’s unavoidable. Anyway, here is the problem. I usually start my new pack (Yasmin) on Saturday. This time, I didn’t remember to start the new pack until Monday. I took two pills Monday, and, two pills today (Tues). Are the chances high for risk of pregnancy for 7 days as they say, or, am I okay because of the length of time I’ve been taking BC? I am 46 years old and way past my “prime time” for having kids without risk. Thank you for your immediate response.

    Comment by Shelly — May 15, 2011 @ 10:15 am

  229. Dear Bianca,

Assuming that you have been on the pill for a long time now, if you have missed three pills in a row, take 2 as soon as possible and then carry on with finishing the pack. In your case, since you took 3 missed pills, just take the last pill and start the new pack. Whenever you miss pills, always use back up contraception for the following week just in case.

    Comment by Janine — May 16, 2011 @ 11:25 am

  232. Dear Stacy,

Sorry for the delayed response. If you didn’t end up taking that last pill on Saturday, May 21 and just started taking your sugar pills on Sunday, May 22nd then carry on taking your sugar pills but on the last sugar pill, instead of taking the sugar pill, take the missed pill. This way, it is like as if you started taking your sugar pills (inactive pills) a day earlier than you are supposed to.

If you did end up taking the last pill later that day, then just carry on taking your pills as you normally would.

Every time you miss a pill, your risk for pregnancy is very high. Did you miss your pill Friday night as well? If so, taking the missed pill the next day is not enough, you have to had taken the missed pill and Saturday’s pill on Saturday. To find out if you are pregnant, wait for your period at the end of the month. If your period comes, then you are not pregnant. If it doesn’t come, take a home pregnancy test and book an appointment with your doctor to get a pregnancy test with your doctor.

When are you normally supposed to get your period? April 8th? or April 28th? How many pills did you miss and which dates did you miss them? What did you do after you missed your pill(s)? Did you double up the next day or just skipped it and carried on? Did you have sex with your husband during the times you missed your pill(s)?
If you are worried you are pregnant, take a pregnancy test. If it is positive, go make an appointment with your doctor for a more accurate pregnancy test. If it comes out positive again, you are pregnant.

It sounds like your body is adjusting to the pills. Keep us updated on your 3rd and 4th month of when you get your period/light spotting. If you don’t get any period/light spotting on your 3rd and or 4th month, take a pregnancy test. If you do get a period/light spotting on the 3rd month you are not pregnant, but you can take a pregnancy test just in case.

I will have to take a week1 pill tomorrow in order to keep my back up pack as it originally was, and then go back to the week2 pills. do not want to do any harm to myself and clearly not planning to get pregnant these days…

  243. Dear Lana,

I’m not sure which type of birth control you are on, but I think the pill you took on your back up pack are the same pills you are taking in your first pack. If you missed a pill, take the missed pill as soon as you remember and resume taking your next pill as you normally would. Whenever you miss pills, make sure you are using back up contraception to make sure you don’t get pregnant. I hope this helps.

So, what you say is that all active pills have the same doze of hormone?

  246. Hi Lana,

Correct. On Drugs.com, it says that “Junel ™ 1/20 (Each light yellow tablet contains 1 mg norethindrone acetate and 20 mcg ethinyl estradiol.)”.

    Comment by Janine — June 22, 2011 @ 12:18 pm

  247. Hi Katie,

When you miss a pill, did you take you missed pill as soon as you remember and the continue finishing the pack as you normally would? If so then your period should not be delayed. If you missed a pill and did not take it as soon as you remember, then your period may be delayed for a day. It is very very important that you take that missed pill as soon as you remember, even if it’s the next day when you are supposed to take the second pill, you double up on that day to make up for the missed pill.

  249. I am on loestrin fe 1/20 with 28 active pills. I recently really missed up on my bc and I guess completely lost my mind bc WHO does this ha I had a lot going on traveling etc…

I took my 28 days of active pills ending on Saturday and then I returned home Monday from a trip very jet lagged and went with a friend to pick up something at drug store (her bc) and I freaked out and I was like I completely forgot and I need to pick up mine. The drug store called me earlier that it was ready but I have a setup automatic refill so they call week early to remind. Anyway so i pick mine up too and freak out because i think I have missed 2 days so I take 2 active pills and then realized what I had done! I just finished my pack Saturday this is my week 4 (no active pill week and I just started my next pack). So I of course stop taking for the remainder of the week and plan to continue my routine of bc(birth control) on Sunday. So come saturday I start my period (if i have one it’s very light but it’s not!) and I am headed to the beach so I end up starting my bc that afternoon and finish pack for duration of this month. Now I just finished my last active pills on Wednesday when I should have 3 more active pills but i dont since I what I did. So I guess I am short 3 active pills this month. what do i do? Should I start my next pack 3 days early or wait until my usually sunday? Or should I pick up another pack and and take 2 pills and one more tomorrow but that messes up that pack! I know this is super confusing!

  251. Hi Tasha,

Whenever you miss pills, it is really bad because your risk of pregnancy is the highest. Definitely use back up contraception for at least a week or two. Wait for your period to come at the end of this pack. If it does, then you are not pregnant. If it doesn’t, take a pregnancy test.

  252. Dear an,

I would advise you to forget the 3 missed pills and wait for your period to come. Once your period comes and goes, then start the new pack. Try not to miss anymore pills because if you do, you should look into other alternative methods of birth control other than the pill because you will be in very high risk of becoming pregnant. Talk to your doctor about getting on the patch, implant, nuvaring, the shot, or even the IUD. Here is a comparison chart that can help you understand the other types of birth control available: http://www.birthcontrolbuzz.com/BirthControlTypesComparisonChart.aspx

  253. Dear Britt,

From my understanding, you have been on the pill for awhile now. It is strange how you have gotten your period even though you took saturday and sunday’s pill. Also, it doesn’t sound like you are taking your pills according to the dates on the pill pack or else you would have known you missed friday’s pill on saturday, not the following monday. I would recommend you to come off the pills for a month and when you get your next period, the Sunday of or after your period, start taking the pills from a brand new pack. This way, you are then following the days on the pill to remind you whether you missed pills the day before or not, and you will get your period when you normally do. Hope this helps.

  254. Somebody please help asap! Okay I forgot to take my pill on june 8 and had sex like 2:30 the next day. I took the pill like right after i had sex. My period was suppose to come on yesterday and it still did not come on. My stomach cramped a little as if my period is on but it still did not come on. Could that mean I am pregnant or is that my nerves???

    Comment by marquila — June 28, 2011 @ 10:06 am

  255. Dear Marquila,

It can be your nerves and stress that is causing your period to be delayed. Continue taking the pill as usual and if your period does not come, wait for your next period. If your period still does not come next month, take a pregnancy test. Also make an appointment with your doctor to get a more accurate pregnancy test.

  256. I have not taken my pills for a good week and have been sick that’s the only thing I can think of that’s making me not feel well. If I missed that many pills will my body be okay if I start a new pack and start taking them again? Please help me asap! Thank you, Autumn

    Comment by Autumn — July 11, 2011 @ 9:45 pm

  257. Dear Autumn,

You can definitely start on the new pack, but I would recommend you don’t start it until you get your period first. The sunday of or after your period, start the new pack.

  258. I have been on the pill for almost three years and have had no problems, but recently I left my pills at home when I was on vacation for 3 night I did not take my pill. After I played catch up and continued the last week and a half of my pack but did have sex about 5 days after all of this. My period did come at the end of the pack and I had a bit of spotting when I had missed the pills. I have started a new pack but I am scared (although my husband did not cum inside of me) that I could still be pregnant. What are the odds of this??

    Comment by sarah — July 20, 2011 @ 9:42 pm

  259. Hi Sarah,

Well, if you did get your period at the end of your pack sounds like you are protected. Wait for your next period to come, and make sure you don’t miss any pills this pack. If it does come then you are definitely not pregnant. If you don’t get your period, take a pregnancy test.

  260. Hello,

I have been on birth control for almost a month now. And I missed a day this past weekend but the next day I went ahead and took the one I missed and then waited at the normal time to take the other one. Now I feel like I am on my period because I have been bleeding a lot for the past day now. I am not suppose to start my period for another 2 weeks. Is this normal? Cause I am worried!

    HELP!!!

    Comment by Hope — July 24, 2011 @ 3:44 pm

  261. Dear Hope,

Since this is only the first month of being on the pill, the bleeding is normal, especially when a pill is missed. Continue taking the pills as you normally would. It is very important that you do not miss any pills because that is when your risk for pregnancy is the highest.

  262. Hi, This is my first month on Sronyx and i have been taking all of my pills consistantly until the second and third day of the third week. I remembered the fourth day and took a pill immediately and then another at my regular time. I threw out the second one i missed. I took the next 3 pills as scheduled as well, finished the last active pill today and started my period yesterday. Is it safe to take the reminder pills or should i start a new pack tomorrow?

    Comment by jean — August 5, 2011 @ 11:07 pm

  263. Dear Jean,

You’re at the end of your pack where you should be having your period anyway and it just started a couple of days early which could happen for girls who are on the first month of oral contraceptives. I would suggest you to take the reminder pills and then start the next pack when you finish the reminder pills. Make sure you don’t miss anymore pills from here on out because your risk of pregnancy is highest.

  264. Hi Im just wondering I miss two pills in my first week of bc pills. I asked someone what i SHOULD DO AND THEY TOLD ME to just take the pills that come after it and not to take the ones i missed. ive been doing that and i got my period for almost 2 weeks now. I dont know what to do because now im reading and it says i shouldve taken them right away. so should I just start a new pack and stop this one or should i just finish theres only one week left of it. its the tricyclen 28 day one. Please any info would be great.

    Comment by serean — August 13, 2011 @ 5:38 pm

  265. Dear Serean,

Whenever you miss any pills, your risk for pregnancy is the highest. I hope you are using back up contraception during and after the time you had missed the 2 pills. In your situation, if you missed two pills and carried on taking the pills without taking the missed pills, you should probably carry on finishing the pack especially if there is only 1 week left. The bleeding you are experiencing now may be because you have just started on birth control pills. Some girls do experience breakthrough bleeding during the first couple of months of starting a pill because your body is getting used to the pills. It is also because you missed 2 pills. Finish off the pack as you normally would and hopefully you would get your regular period afterwards.

  266. Hello. This past weekend I missed two days of pills. I was finishing up the second week and missed Friday and Saturday, so I took two pills as soon as I remembered Sunday morning, and then took Sunday’s pill later in the day at the normal time. Today is Monday, and I’m bleeding like I’m starting my period – pretty much a week early. Is this normal? Or will my period go away in a couple days and start as usual next week when I usually get it? I’m just concerned and was wondering if I did anything wrong with the missed pills.

Any information would be extremely helpful! Thank you.

    Comment by Ashley — September 19, 2011 @ 8:09 am

  267. Dear Ashley,

Whenever you stop taking or miss pills, your body thinks it is supposed to have your period. The bleeding is normal and may or may not stop this week. Continue taking your pills as your normally would and when you start your next pack, your period should have definitely stopped. Whenever you miss pills, not only will you be at risk of pregnancy, but may also start bleeding (if you miss 2 or more pills). This is why it is very important not to miss any pills while on oral contraceptives.

  268. Hi I have a question. So if I have been on birth control for 7 months. If I miss one day and I start ovulating on that day that I missed, is it pointless to continue taking the rest of the pills for that month since ovulation already occurred? And if I have unprotected sex while I’m ovulating then it’s possible pregnancy so if that were to happen should you just not have sex for the rest of that month unless other bc is used?

    Comment by A — February 7, 2012 @ 10:54 pm

  269. Dear A,

If you miss a pill you do not start ovulating right away. Usually when a pill is missed, some bleeding may occur. If a pill is missed take the missed pill right away as soon as you remember.

  270. Am on Levlen. Forgot to take the active pill on the Wednesday of the last week and again on the Friday – not a good week for remembering – so I thought what I was meant to do was skip the placebos and start a new pack. But now I have my period and am on the new months active pills. Do I keep taking the active pills?

  271. Im usually very regular with my pills but lately I’ve been busy, and I missed 4 pills in a row. The last 2 of Week 1 and the first 2 of Week 2. But now Im bleeding heavier than I do on my actual period, is this normal?

    Comment by Caity — March 15, 2012 @ 10:52 am

  272. Dear Caity,

The bleeding is normal because of the missed pills. Take your birth control pill for today, and take yesterday’s missed pill today (yes you will be taking 2 pills today). Leave the other missed pills and continue the rest of the pack as normal. Starting today, use back up contraception for the next 7 days. If you were sexually active during the missed pills days, you may need to use emergency contraception (ie. Plan B). To be safe you can also, skip the inactive pills for this month and continue the next pack without getting your period.

  273. I’m in my second week of birth control and i just started. I’m taking necon 1/35. I went to camp recently and had to hand over my pills to the nurse, and when it was my scheduled time for my dose i couldn’t find the nurse. I ended up skipping two days. (Friday and Saturday) sunday morning i got my period and i took two pills at my scheduled time and am planning on taking two tomorrow to catch up. Am i doing the right thing?

    Comment by christi — March 18, 2012 @ 7:09 pm

  274. Dear christi,

You don’t have to take two doses the second day. Just continue the rest of your pack as normal and use back up contraception for a week. If you are having unprotected sex, you may need to start the next pack of pills without a break by skipping inactive pills from your last pack.

Just in case you can take Plan B to be on the safe side.

  277. What are the chances of ovulation if I’ve been on the same bc for the last 2 years (aviane) and missed one day on the 6th day of a new pack?ive never missed before and always take at same time each morning. The day after I missed I took 2 pills. My husband and I had intercourse on Tuesday (3rd day of pack) so I realize I was protected that day but if sperm can live for 3-5 days that might make them still alive by Friday or sat if I ovulated. What are chances of pregnancy. Will cervical mucous be too thick for sperm to get through by Friday or sat.? Will lining of uterus be too thin for implantation if for some reason egg was fertilized )

    Comment by sp — April 10, 2013 @ 7:20 am

  278. Dear sp,

Since you made up for the missed pill, chances of you becoming pregnant is very low.
