What happens if I miss a pill?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ashlynn @ 9:24 am

We all get busy and sometimes remembering to take the pill is at the back of our minds – until it’s 4am and that light goes off! “What do I do now?”

Panicking about missing a pill all depends on which one you forget to take. The “active” pills may not be as effective in preventing pregnancy if you miss the first few or last few pills in a pack. If you miss the “reminder” pills there’s no need to worry because this is when you get your period – although, for peace of mind, don’t be afraid to use a back-up method like a condom.

What to do if you miss your “active” birth control pills

  • Take the pill as soon as you remember then take the next pill at your usual time. Unfortunately this means you may have to take 2 pills in 1 day and you may experience nausea.
  • If you miss 2 active pills in a row in Week 1 or Week 2 take 2 pills on the day you remember and 2 pills the next day. Then follow through with 1 pill a day until the pack is finished. Pregnancy may not be prevented if you have sex during the 7 days after you restart your birth control pills. Use a condom or another method of non-hormonal birth control as a back-up for those 7 days.
  • If you miss 2 active pills (in a row) in Week 3 there’s two things you can do and those depend on when you started your pack. If you started on Day 1 of your period throw out the rest of the pack and start a fresh one that same day. If you started your pill pack on a Sunday keep taking 1 pill every day until Sunday. On Sunday, throw out the rest of the pack and start a new pack of pills that same day. You may not get your period this month. Here again the risk of pregnancy is high so use a condom or spermicide for the first 7 days after you start taking the new pill pack.
  • If you miss 3 or more active pills in a row (during the first 3 weeks) and you started taking the pill on Day 1 of your period throw out the rest of your pack and start with a fresh one that same day.
  • If you forget to take any of the reminder pills in Week 4 just throw out the pills you missed. Keep taking 1 pill each day until the pack is finished.

  1. Ok I have a question if anyone has an answer:I am relatively new to the birth control thing. I have been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo for a month now. Well my period came 2 days before I was supposed to start the placebo pills, therefore it will end only a day into the placebo pills (my period is usually short)So should I continue with the rest of the 6 placebo pills or start a new pack instead of even starting the placebo pills? The reason for this is my boyfriend is coming in a few days and I want to make sure we are as protected as possible. So if I am done with my period but still on the placebo pills won’t it be similar to skipping a pill therefore making me more susceptible to pregnancy??Thanks!!

  2. “So if I am done with my period but still on the placebo pills won’t it be similar to skipping a pill therefore making me more susceptible to pregnancy??”It’s not similar to skipping a pill. If you are taking the Pill correctly and consistently everyday you are 99% protected. I think it would be best for you to keep taking your reminder (placebo) pills then start your new pack as usual. If you don’t feel confident about being protected use a secondary birth control method like a condom or spermicide.Hopefully that helps!

  3. i have a couple of questions. first, does cipro react with BCPs at all? also, i skipped 2 pills in my pack around the 14th day of the pack. i’ve read that that is around the time a woman ovulates. when i’m off the pill, i have the most irregular period. so when i’m on the pill do i ovulate regularly? i’m wondering if my odds are high of getting pregnant. i’ve had sex twice with no backup method during this week of the 14th day. thanks!

  5. Anonymous from Sept.06/07 – First off sorry it took so long to reply. There are certain antibiotics which doctors say can cause decreased effectiveness. Antibiotics that are listed as interfering include:Rifampin Penicillin Amoxicillin Sulfonamide Ampicillin Cotrimoxazole Tetracycline Griseofulvin Minocycline Phenobarbitol Metronidazole NitrofurantoinCipro doesn’t appear to be on the list but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t still affect your birth control. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Use a condom or spermicide during the run of your antibiotic and make sure to continue for one week afterwards.

  6. I took the first grey “active pill” a few hours late, because i forgot to pick up a new pack. Later that week, after taking the pills at the correct time each day, i had sex. We were using a condom, but it broke ad we never finished. Later on, we went at it again, this time without a condom, but he pulled out before he came. The next morning, i woke up late and took the pill a few hours late. I was just wondering if this could cause me to get pregnant?

  7. Ok so I’m on the pill. In Nov of 08 I forgot to take it for 3 days in the 2nd week and got my period. On the first day I got my period I had unprotected sex. I have gotten my period every month since, and have take 1-2 HPT’s every week (I know obessive) and they are all negative. I have also been to the doctor in Feb. Would I be in the cleaR?

  8. If you’ve had your period every month since last November, and all the home pregnancy tests have come back negative (plus the test administered by your doctor), then it’s probably safe to assume you’re not pregnant. Of course, if you still feel uncertain, make an appointment with your doctor for another test.

  9. I take my pills in the morning when I wake up and I start each pack on Sunday. I forgot to take it Sunday, Monday, and then didn’t remember Tuesday’s until later in the day. So I took all 3 at once. This was the week right before I was supposed to start my sugar pills (week before my regular period). On Wednesday I got my period (a week early). I kept taking my pills for the rest of the week, and then on the following Sunday instead of taking the sugar pills I started a new pack. Today when I got home from work I bled and still am a bit now. Am I getting my period twice and is there anyway to stop it? What should I have done different? (not including missing the 2.5 pills)

    Comment by Anonymous — July 23, 2008 @ 4:14 pm

  10. It sounds like you did the right thing by continuing on with a new pack. If you are getting your period twice (although this “second” period may just be light spotting), I don’t think there’s a way to stop it. You’ll have to let your body get back on course – which it will – by taking your pills everyday as usual. If they don’t resume, please don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or a healthcare professional at your local walk-in clinic.:-)

  12. There is a chance you could get pregnant. You may want to look into getting the morning after pill for your local Planned Parenthood clinic or pharmacy. Performing a pregnancy test will also give you an answer.

  13. I’ve been taking Ortho-cyclone for about 2 months now. And all month I haven’t missed a day. At the beginning of the month is was a little rocky, but other than that I’ve done fine, taking them every night at 11 to 11:30. Then the other day, I missed my very last pill, right before I’m supposed to start my sugar pills. I ended up taking my last pill on Sunday instead of Saturday. I was supposed to start Sunday, but I haven’t started yet (the same thing happened to me last month, but I did terrible on taking them last month). Can missing one pill, even my last day, throw off my period a little? Or is there a high chance I’m pregnant?

    Comment by Anonymous — October 8, 2008 @ 5:45 am

  14. That’s a good question. If you’ve only been taking it for two months your body is probably still adjusting to the new hormones, so your period being a couple of days late may just be an outcome of this. However (and this is not meant to scare you, just inform you), the pill is 99% effective only when taken correctly and consistently. If you had sex the same day you forgot to take your last active pill I would take a home pregnancy test just to be sure.:)

  15. Thank you. I have a friend who has been taking birth control for over a year and she said that she always starts her period three days after she ends her actual pills. So that made me feel a little better.

  16. Ok, I have been on the pill for a few years now and very good about taking them. I am on my fifth day of my period, basically done with it, and I had sex with my bf today. Tonight was my night to start a new pack of pills. My mom was going to pick up the prescription with hers, but forgot to because she was babysitting for my niece. She is going to pick them up tomorrow. Will I be fine?? Should I take both pills tomorrow – the one I missed today as well?? Thanks!

  17. Take the “forgotten” pill as soon as you can, then take the next pill at your usual time. You’ll probably feel pretty ill seeing that you’re having to double up, but by taking them on the same day you’re getting your routine back on track.

  19. I have been on birth control for about a year and a half now and I forgot to take the first pill in my new pack on Friday night. I realized it on Saturday night when it was time to take that one. I didn’t make up that pill on Saturday because I didn’t even think about having to do that. I have never missed a pill by a full 24hrs. It is now Monday and I didn’t make up that pill because I am not sure about it now. What should I do? Take it now or just forget about that pill and go on with the pills as usual?

I still continued to take the active pills even though i was having my period. After my period ended i had sex with my boyfriend and didn’t use a condom. He didn’t cum in me but i am sure there was pre-cum. When it came time for the placebo pills i took them but didn’t get my period like i was supposed to. I took a test and it was negative. I had to stop taking birth control for insurance pourposes. i don’t know what is wrong? I still haven’t gotten my period. am i pregnant or beings i am not taking my pills anymore making me not have it. I have heard it takes a while sometimes to get your period after being on the pill. 25. Okay a few questions,I’m leaving to visit my boyfriend in a week and I am scheduled to have my period the first few days of my visit. What would happen if I didnt take my sugar inactive pills (I’m on YAZ) and just started a new pack? OR if I skipped taking, say, two sugar pills and began a new pack? Would any of this make my period come sooner? or skip? If not is there any way I can make it so that my period will come sooner? Please reply, i appreciate it!

  34. Hi I have been on the pills for the last 3 years and rarely missed pills. I usually start my packs on a saturday and the last month has been more stressful that I forgot 2 pills in a row in the second week of active pills and only realized it on the day after. I didn’t take 3 pills but I just continued with the rest of the pack. Me and my partner did have unprotected sex once in the following week. My period was suppose to start every monday on the 7 day pill free week but it didn’t. I tried a HPT on the 2nd day of missed period and both the tests are negative. Could I still be pregnant? what should I do now? I haven’t got my periods yet!

  40. So I’ve been taking YAZ for a long time now and quite regularly. I forgot to take my pill on Monday and took two on Tuesday but my boyfriend and I had sex without a condom so we decided to take the morning after pill just in case which I took on Wednesday morning. But then we had sex without a condom again on Thursday night (early Friday AM) and I was wondering if I could get pregnant from that night? I finished my pack for the month and I’m just wondering because Friday starts my placebo week and I didn’t know if that does anything to me. Thank you!

  41. Dear Annonymous,If your period does come on the Friday or Saturday, then you should be safe. Just to be sure you can take a pregnancy test three to four weeks later. Remember, if you do forget to take a pill, take it as soon as you remember that day. If you don’t remember until the next day, skip that pill and continue taking the pill as per your daily dosing schedule.

  44. Dear Anonymous,There is a chance that you could get pregnant. Make sure you fill your prescription before the last week of your current set of pills to make sure you won’t miss a pill. At the moment, you can wait and see if your period comes next month, and if it doesn’t, take a pregnancy test. Or to be safe, you can take a morning after pill today.

I then had sex the day after I started again, but now I stopped my packet 4 pills early and still havnt ‘come on’ after 4 days from the last pill I took, Could I be pregnant or is it just because I stopped takin them early so my body is ‘confused’?!?Any answers would be a great help, thanks x

    Comment by Anonymous — May 21, 2009 @ 3:23 pm

  53. Dear Amanda,Because you just started to take birth control pills, you need to diligently take the pills more or less the same time every day. When you stop taking the pills your body thinks that it is time to menstruate. Just try to remember to take your birth control pills everyday so you won’t get your period. Every time you miss your pill you increase the risk of pregnancy so it is very important to take your pills everyday.

    Comment by Janine — May 21, 2009 @ 5:45 pm

  54. Dear Annonymous,It sounds like your body is confused. When one or more pills are missed, the risk of pregnancy is high. Every time you stop using the pill, make sure you use back up contraception (ie.condom). Also, whenever you have sex and then miss several pills afterwards, it is usually recommended by your doctor to use emergency contraception. Speak to your GP and let him/her know your situation and he/she would be able to tell you what to do.

    Comment by Anonymous — May 26, 2009 @ 7:03 pm

  56. Dear Anonymous,Majority of the girls taking birth control is to prevent themselves from getting pregnant, so if she does miss a pill there is a chance that she will get pregnant. She might be lucky and not get pregnant. If you are trying to get pregnant, being on the birth control might not be a good method. Please speak to your doctor for alternative methods to help you get pregnant. If you are on birth control to regulate your periods so that in the future you can become pregnant, being on birth control is the right method. For more information, please speak to your doctor so you can be informed of the methods to regulate periods, to become pregnant and to prevent pregnancy.

Am i highly likely to become prego?

  64. I have a question as well. I'm on Jolessa and it's the kind that makes you not have your period for 3 months. I've been taking it for about 2 years. I started spotting in the second week of the second month so I stopped taking the pills for a week to get the spotting to stop and have my period early. (MISTAKE!) I started the pills again for two days then had sex. I read online that I was supposed to wait 2 weeks instead. Should I be worried?

    Comment by Jean — July 12, 2009 @ 9:19 am

  65. Dear Jean,When you stop taking the pill, that is when the risk of pregnancy is the highest. You should discuss your situation with your doctor and also do a pregnancy test in a couple weeks (or whenever your doctor advises is the best time to do a pregnancy test).

  67. I should be on week 3 of my pills, but forgot to take my pill this past Saturday (last day of week 2). I forgot to double up on Sunday (beginning of week 3). I then forgot my pill yesterday (Monday) and today (Tuesday) I started my period. Should I just ride it out and start my next pack on Sunday or should I continue taking the pills as if nothing happened?

    Comment by AmyLyn Vause — August 4, 2009 @ 9:52 am

Today is wednesday, August 12th and me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex but he did not "go" in me at all! what should i do?????

    Comment by MARANDA KAYE — August 12, 2009 @ 3:13 pm

  71. Dear Maranda,Well since you took Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday pills on Tuesday, you should take the Wednesday pill and make sure you don't forget anymore pills! Forgetting pills will increase your chance of pregnancy especially when you did not use back up contraception such as a condom. Always use back up contraception if you don't remember taking the pill.

I'm on the first week of the next pack, and it's Saturday. Thursday and Friday I spaced out with taking my pill, and Friday I had unprotected sex (he ejaculated inside me). This morning I had a nightmare and woke up at 5 AM, and I remembered about missing the pills because of the dream. So, I took both Thursday's and Friday's pill at that very second. Now it's 9:30 AM. My friends say I'm still protected because I had over 21 days of active pills in my system. Is this true? Or should I go straight to plan B method?

I woke up in the morning and remembered, so I took both Thursday's and Friday's pill right away. I had unprotected sex on Friday, and today is Saturday.. Do you think I'm safe?My friends tell me that because I missed the two pills on a week that I'd normally be taking placebo pills on, but instead I skipped it for active pills, I'm fine. I am on the week that I am suppose to be getting my period , and I am just scared because last week I was 3 hours late for my pill then the next day, i was in school and did not have water on me so i chewed it. That night I had unprotected sex, but the next day I took it at regular time. Is there a higher risk of me not getting my period this week, and becoming pregnant?

It seems to have stopped, but I'm not quite finished my pack ( I have one more pill) I'm wondering if I should finish this one, wait for my period and start the next or should I just go onto the next one. This light bleeding is also known as spotting and spotting is common amongst girls who have just started using birth control pills. Stay on the birth control for 3 months and see if the spotting continues. Keep your doctor informed about the spotting if the spotting continues after 3 months, your doctor may prescribe you on a different, maybe stronger, pill.Keep us updated :)

Girls have gotten pregnant when they have missed pills. Whenever you stop birth control there is a risk of getting pregnant.

  129. I have a question. I have been on TriNessa for 4-5 years now. Never forgotten a pill a whole day. I thought I had taken all my pills as normal till just now when I took tonights pill. I started my pack a week ago. So I had taken Sun – WEd. Had sex thursday morning, went to class and came home and went to bed. Forgot Thursdays pill. Well last night I took the next pill as normal thinking i was on track. Then tonight I noticed and went ahead and took the 2 pills to catch back up. Would I be able to get by…or am I at a high risk? I hope someone can tell me. THanks.~ZOE

  130. I just realized that I am going away in about a month and I will be on my period the whole week I am away. I started my period today and I have missed the first 2 pills in the pack in order to try to miss this period and offset the timing of my next one. This happened because I thought I was okay for timing but realized only today that I was off by a week. Will this actually work? This would mean that while I have my period I would be taking the first week of my pills while catching up on the 2 that I have missed already. Will my period come when I finish my pack like it normally does??? Please help…Thanks!!

  131. Dear Zoe,I would say continue taking your pills as normal and wait until your period is supposed to come. If it comes then you are fine, but if it doesn't come as normal then take a pregnancy test.Gluck!

When you come back then take your sugar pills, if you have any, if you don't then just don't take the pill for a week after you come back just so you have your period. This way you get your period this month and then next month, it will be either one week early or late. Hope that made sense!

  133. annonymous,if i usually take my bc pill at eleven but sometimes i take it a little late up to 2 hours late sometimes. IF i have sex with my bf around 12am and take the pill around 1 or 2am Am i at risk of getting pregnant since my pill is a little late??

    Comment by Anonymous — April 7, 2010 @ 8:50 pm

  134. Dear Anonymous,As long as you diligently take your pill on a daily basis you are 99% protected. Taking the pill the same time every day helps you remember to take the pill every day, but if you are an hour or two off, it's okay as long as you have been and will continuously take the pill every day.

  135. Okay this is the start of my second month of using Loestrin, my question is that…I forgot to take my pill on monday or tuesday or wednesday (It was a hectic week and I can't remember which one) in the first week of my new pack and I just realized it 3-5days later on a friday. I took two pills that friday but have had sex every day since tuesday. Is there a possibility i could be pregnant? Should I buy a Plan B?

    Comment by Anonymous — April 9, 2010 @ 4:30 pm

  136. Dear Anonymous,Since you took two pills on Friday, wait for your period to come when it is supposed to. If it comes you are not pregnant. If your period doesn't come then you should take a pregnancy test. Goodluck!

  137. alright, so i was starting a new pack and completely lost the third pill. Took the next one at my normal time the next day, and had unprotected sex that night and he went inside. stupid, I KNOW. but then the next day i took a plan b type pill and have been taking my pill everday since then. should i be worried about getting pregnant?

    Comment by Jaime — June 7, 2010 @ 3:14 am

  138. Dear Jaime,

I’m glad you took Plan B. Wait and see if you get your period at the end of the pack. If you do, you are not pregnant, but if you don’t you should go see your doctor to get a pregnancy test.

  139. I forgot to take my pill on Saturday and took the two pills on Sunday. On sunday I bled a little. Is this normal? Should I use condoms when having sex now? I only missed one pill.

    Comment by Jenny Montoya — June 13, 2010 @ 11:41 pm

  140. Dear Jenny,

Whenever you miss any pills, you may experience a little bit of bleeding (spotting). This is normal. Continue taking the pills and the spotting should go away. When you have sex, make sure you do use back up contraception such as condoms for the next few days just in case. Better safe than sorry :)

  141. Hi! I’ve been on Yasmin for years. This month, I finished the last pack of my prescription, and I couldn’t reach a doctor who would renew it! So I’ve missed the first 5 days of my new pack. What should I do now : start a new pack with the first pill, or use the same weekly-pattern I used to have and start with the sixth pill tomorrow morning?
Also : I may have intercourse next week (that would be on the second week of the pack). Would that put me at risk for pregnancy?
    Thanks for advising!

    Comment by Someone — June 22, 2010 @ 5:40 pm

  144. Dear Vee,

Sorry for the late reply! If you are more comfortable staying with your weekly pattern, then you should start with the sixth pill tomorrow morning (if you haven’t done so yet or started the new pack, then wait and get back on the weekly pattern to start your pill), but if you don’t really care, then you should start the new pack with the first pill today. Whenever you have missed any pills, always use back up contraceptives when having intercourse because you will definitely be at risk for pregnancy.

  145. Dear Allison,

Whenever you are missing any pills, use back up contraceptives because you will be at risk of becoming pregnant. As soon as your step mom gets you a new pack of birth control, you can start taking it right away.

  146. I have been on birth control for about a year. We always use the “pull out method” as well. About a month ago we had “unprotected” sex, but I have been taking my pills regularly. There was one day that I forgot, but I just took 2 the next day. I am a Wednesday starter and I did not get my period yet, I am back to the next Wednesday, supposed to start my new pack. Should I start or should I wait to see if my period comes? How likely is it that I am pregnant?

  147. If I missed my pill yesterday and had sex today around five then took the pill I missed along with the one I needed to tonight an if I ake the plan b pill tmrw morning will I be alright? I’ve been on the pill for roughly a year..

    Comment by Ggbee — July 11, 2010 @ 11:51 pm

  148. Dear Sarah,

You should continue your pack and see if your period comes the next month. If it doesn’t take a pregnancy test and make an appointment with your doctor.

    Comment by Janine — July 13, 2010 @ 9:35 am

  149. Dear Ggbee,

Sounds like you should be okay. When it’s time for your period and it doesn’t come then you should take a pregnancy test.

  150. I have been taking my pills for 3 months now but this last month I forgot to take a pill twice in the first two weeks but not in a row.. and now my period is a day late but I have been having all the symptoms that I should be starting? Will my period be late? or will it not come at all this month? I am kinda worried.

    Comment by Jessica — July 23, 2010 @ 1:02 pm

  151. Dear Jessica,

Did your period come on time while you were still on the first two packs? If they were, then you should have your period on time. If it was not on time on the first two months, then you most likely will not get it on time this month either. Have you had unprotected sex during the two times you forgot your pills? If you did have unprotected sex and your period doesn’t come when it is supposed to, go get a pregnancy test. If you can give me more information, I can better answer your question.

  152. I started my first pack of yaz on a Wednesday. Will my period irregulate again, if I skip three days between packs to start on a Sunday?
Can I skip three days between packs?

    Comment by Anna — August 3, 2010 @ 3:05 pm

  153. Dear Anna,

If you prefer to start your pills on a Sunday, then you need to skip 4 days worth of pills so you continue your second pill on the Monday (because you have already taken the first pill on the Wednesday instead of the Sunday). This way, every time you start a new week or pack, you always start on the Sunday. I hope that makes sense. Of course, during the first month of being on Yaz, make sure you use back up contraception (ie. spermicide or condoms). This is especially important while you skip the 4 days because obviously you are not taking birth control pills.

  155. Dear Anonymous,

You can start your new pack now and continue taking the pills like you would normally. If your period doesn’t come, take a pregnancy test. If your period does come, then you are fine and can continue taking the pills as you normally would.

  156. hello im taking loesterin 24 FE for almost 6 months……… so i had my period last month around june 2-3 then my bf and i had sex on july 28…… i was supposed to get my period on the 2-3 until now i dont have it,… is it because of the pills??/

    Comment by sheena — August 6, 2010 @ 10:29 am

  157. Dear Sheena,

Girls on Loestrin 24 fe are supposed to get their periods once a month that lasts for 3 days. Since June 2-3 was your last period, I am assuming you did not get your period on July 2-3 and August 2 -3. In that case you have missed your period for 2 months while still being on the pills? It sounds like you may be pregnant and should get a pregnancy test.

  159. Hello, I’ve been taking Loestrin 24 FE for about two months now to help with my cramps/irregular menstrual cycle and recently I missed two days (Tuesday and Wednesday, I realized this on Thursday). I took both the Tuesday and Wednesday pill as soon as I realized this. Afraid to take a third pill on Thursday, I held off on the pill until today to take it in the morning and then take my pill for Friday in the night. But I just noticed that I’m spotting. Is this because I missed those two days, or is this natural? And what should I do in the future if this happens again (if I miss two days in a row)?

I am not sexually active at all.

    Thanks for your help.

  160. Ok…so I went to take one of my active pills yesterday and I accidently dropped it and then I couldn’t find it. How do I go about my pills? Do I keep taking them regularly or what? I’m unsure on what to do. Please help

    Comment by Rachel — August 29, 2010 @ 7:27 am

  161. Dear Ali,

Since you missed your period 2 days in a row the bleeding is just breakthrough bleeding. This is normal whenever you miss any pills, so to keep your period regulated don’t forget to take those pills. Whenever you realize you had forgotten 1 or 2 pills, take it right away and then continue on with your pack. Whenever you miss 3 or more pills, take one pill as soon as possible and just continue on the pack.

    Comment by Janine — August 30, 2010 @ 2:53 pm

  162. Dear Rachel,

Take tomorrow’s pill today and continue taking one pill a day until you are out of pills.
