Can birth control pills affect your cholesterol?

Studies have shown that birth control pills can affect your cholesterol level. However, it all depends upon the type of pill you're using and what concentration of estrogen or progestin it contains.

Birth control pills that contain estrogen can increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (the "good" cholesterol), decrease the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(the "bad" cholesterol), and cause an increase in your total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The progestin in birth control pills has the opposite effect.

Birth control pills that have a higher amount of estrogen can have a slightly better effect on your blood lipid levels. Although, the changes aren't significant and won't affect your health.
