Dear Gina,

If you would like to get your period at the same time of month that you have had before then you should wait until you get your period. Make sure you use back up contraception (ie. spermicide or condoms) during that time to protect yourself from pregnancy. If you don't care when you get your period, then you can take it right away.

I would recommend you to wait for your period so that you know you are not pregnant when you start these new pills and that you won't confuse your cycle with going off and then back on birth control pills.

Hi, I have been on beyaz for a year now. I had to stop for 2 weeks bc of lapse in insurance. My question is do I have to wait for my period to come before I begin taking pills again or can I start taking them right away?

Dear Gigi,

Take a pregnancy test. I believe first response will give you an accurate result before your missed period. If it comes out negative, take it again a week later to confirm. I would also recommend you to see your doctor to talk about other birth control methods that does not require you to take it daily (ie. Nuvaring, the shot, iud, or the patch). You can find out more about other birth control options here: http://www.birthcontrolbuzz.com/BirthControlTypesComparisonChart.aspx

hello,

I am on loestrin 24 fe, I took a break from my birth control for two months and my period came down regularly. My last period started Friday December 23rd. I restarted my pack on the 31st and didn't take it the same time every day. I had unprotected sex the 2nd and the 6th. I continued my birth control normally. I was wondering if i could be pregnant? Since i took a 2 month break and restarted my bc pills and had unprotected sex a week after my period and was only on my 3rd pill? I stopped my birth control pills 3 days ago to attempt to induce my period and nothing? I have a 28 day cycle and should be gettin my period today, could the fact that i started my bc pills after my period make it come later? thank you

Dear Quan,

When you have unprotected sex and did not ejaculate in her, there is a very high chance that you could have pre-ejaculated in her. Pre-ejaculation occurs before ejaculation and it may contain sperm that causes pregnancy. Your girlfriend may have experienced some bleeding due to her stopping the pill and her body is readjusting back to her normal rhythm. To find out if she is pregnant, you can get her to take a pregnancy test, although the earliest a pregnancy test can detect pregnancy is five days before her expected period, you might have to wait. I would highly recommend you to use back up birth control (ie. condoms or spermicide) while your girlfriend is off the pill. If she finds out she is not period, it is highly recommended she use birth control to prevent pregnancy.

Dear Nikki,

This should stop if you do take a 7 day break from the pills. Do as your doctor recommended.

Ive been on levlen Ed for about 4-5 months now & skipped my period this whole time. I had no problems until 2 wks ago when I started a very light (brown) bleed after i had a tummy upset. It's progressively become heavier (& red with clots at times) & doesn't look lke it is going to stop. A week & a half into new pack my dr has advised to take a break & start taking active pills again next fri (almost 2 wks away). I'm not currently sexually active but know to use protection however I really want to know how long this bleeding can last given its been going on for 2 weeks already. It's driving me crazy plus it should be noted that I am not pregnant either.

Dear Kaitlynn,

That is hard to tell because you stopped your birth control pills not long ago. Usually, it takes your body a 2 - 3 months go resume back to it's original rhythm.

Dear asia,

To start over, stay off the birth control pills until you get your period. On the Sunday of your period, start the pack.

Dear Nalinie,

I would recommend you wait for your period again to start the pill, this way you will be protected fully and you know you are not pregnant when you start the pill.

Hi, I have been on the pill for almost a year. I had my period during the the tablet free break and started the new pack when I was supposed to. However I got sick and was taking antibiotics, so I decided to stop the pill. I started bleeding two weeks after I took The first pill from the new pack. I want to go back on the pill but not sure when to start. Do I continue with my old schedule or do I wait for when I get my period again?

Dear Kayla,

If you want to get pregnant, you should stop taking Femiane. If you do not want to get pregnant, then continue taking Femiane. Femiane is an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. If you do want to become pregnant, speak to your doctor about what you need to do and how to prepare yourself for pregnancy.

Dear baby,

If you start the new pack of pills right after you finish your last pack of pills, you should still be protected. Just in case you can wait seven days or use back up contraception during the first week of being on the new pills.

Dear Lisa,

If you did not start the new pack right away after you finished Loestrin Fe, you need to use back up contraception during the first month of being on the new pill. If you did start the new pack right after you finished Loestrin Fe, you should be protected, but just in case you can wait seven days.

Dear I'm stupid,

How long ago was the unprotected sex? If it was less than 72 hours ago, you can take plan B. If it is more than 72 hours ago, you can take a pregnancy test at the end of your cycle. If it is negative, you are fine. If it is positive, make an appointment with your doctor to get a more accurate test done.

Okay, so I have been on birth control for a year now but my doctor accidentally called in trivora randomly when I'm supposed to take tri-nessa. I started taking trivora which I had to double up on several times to catch up and took it for about two weeks. Had horrible side effects and couldn't take it, so I stopped trivora after the two weeks. Had breakthrough bleeding or whatever and then once it stopped I got tri-nessa and started a new pack. On the second day I had sex and my partner didn't really do the best job of pulling out on time. He definitely ejaculated a lot after he pulled out but I'm worried that I might still be at risk, So basically now I'm freaking out. Suggestions/advice?

Dear Questioning,

If you prefer your period to arrive the same time as it has been for the previous past years, then you would want to wait a couple of weeks and start the pill on the Sunday or the first day of your period. Otherwise, you can start the pack right away.

Dear Shelby,

When did you start taking birth control again? It sounds like you may be late because of the break you had from the pills. Continue the pack as you normally would. If you are worried, take a pregnancy test.

Hi, I was taking birth control for almost a year well last month I forgot to take a pill and we had a condom break. Even though I probably would have been fine I took the plan b pill then I continued to take my bc the rest of the month and had my period as normal on time. I didn't start my bc back up after my last period though because I lost my insurance and I just got it back. So now I am 3 days late, even though we used condoms and none broke I am still so worried. Do you think it's pregnancy or is it more likely from stopping my birth control? PLEASE HELP! My husband and I are not ready to have another baby yet!

Hi, I have been on the pill for ~10 years. I went off of it this last 'cycle' 2 weeks ago because of a change of insurance and I didn't have an refillable Rx at the time. It will be 2 weeks into not taking any pills this upcoming Sunday - but now I have a new pill pack. Is it possible for me to start this new pill pack on this upcoming Sunday, or should I mimic my usual cycle of pills an wait an additional two weeks (which would have been 1 week on, 1 week on the placebos/off pills) to start a brand new pack? I am assuming if I started a new pack this coming Sunday, it would just push my period off by 2 weeks eventually after my system evens out? Please advise. Thanks!

Dear Confused,

Your body is probably just as confused as you are and is probably thrown off the cycle a bit due to the pill and the stress you are undergoing. If you are worried that you are pregnant, take a pregnancy test. If it is negative, you are fine and should patiently wait for your body to resume it's normal rhythm. If it is positive, you should make an appointment with your doctor to get a more accurate test.

I started the pill again after a few months of not taking it . I started taking it the first week of November on the Sunday after I started my period. I broke my jaw the next week On Nov. 7 one day after my period ended. I was no longer able to take the pill and I started a 2 day period on Nov. 8. What day should my cycle restart? I have had sex since then but a condom was used. But I feel like I should have already started my period. It has been one month since I had to go off the pill and one month tomorrow since the second period started.

Dear Anon,

I would suggest you stay on the same pack because you didn't have any problems with it for the first 3 or so months of being on the pill. The breakthrough bleeding you have experienced is most likely from your missed pills which probably messed up your cycle for a bit and your body is taking awhile to adjust. Stay on the same pack, but don't start it until your next period (which would be in a couple of weeks).

I started take the pill in November the Sunday after I started my period which was the first week of the month. I broke my jaw on Nov. 7 and was no longer able to take my pills because my mouth was wired shut. I had just stopped my period on Nov 6. I started to bleed again on Nov 8. Before the accident my periods were starting on the 1st or 2nd day of the month. It is now 6 days into the next month and I haven't started yet. I have had sex but we used condoms. Should my period start on the 7th or 8th since I had to stop the pill and then had a second period again for a few days? I never really have the same symptoms all the time before periods so it is a little hard to tell if it is starting. I am also under a lot of stress, more so than normal.

Hi,

I have been on Brevinor-1 for the past 5-7 months. It worked well for me the first 3 or so months, however in July I messed it up by forgetting the pills on vacation for a week and had my period then.

Afterwards I continued to take the pill as usual but started to have my regular/heavy bleeding periods during my active tablets and have a light, outdated period on my inactive tablets.
Two weeks ago I stopped taking my pill after my last inactive tablet. Should I continue to take Brevinor-1 after my next period (which will disrupt the 28 day cycle) or see my doctor for a new brand?

Will I continue to have these problems if I stick to the same brand?

Dear Carolina,

It depends on when you started the pill. If you did the Sunday start method (starting the pill on the Sunday of your period) or the First day start method (starting the pill on the first day of your period), you should be protected. If you started the pill in the quick start method (starting the pill the same day you received your pills), there is a chance you may be pregnant. Wait for your period to come at the end of the pack. If it doesn't come, take a pregnancy test.

Dear Anthony,

If your girlfriend decides to take the pill, she has to stay on the pill. She can't stop taking it whenever and however long she wants to or else she will not be protected from pregnancy.
If you and your girlfriend had sex during the 2 weeks she stopped taking the pill, there is a very high chance that your girlfriend is pregnant. Your girlfriend should take a pregnancy test since she is late. If it is negative, she is not pregnant and should wait for her next period to come to start a brand new pack of pills. She should stay on the pills as long as she wants to stay protected. If the pregnancy test is positive, make an appointment with her doctor to get a more accurate pregnancy test done.

My girlfriend stopped taking her pill for 2 weeks then started in the 3rd week of her menstrual cycle. Now she is having spotting/bleeding when her period should be here and mild and light cramps. Her period is 3-4 days late should we be worried?

Dear Lisa,

When your doctor prescribes you antibiotics, it is very very important you let him/her know you are also on birth control because he/she can prescribe you to another antibiotic that will not interact with your birth control pill. While on the antibiotics, make sure you are using back up contraception (ie. condoms or spermicide) to ensure you are still protected from pregnancy if you are going to have sex because the antibiotic your doctor prescribed you (metronidazole) will decrease the effectiveness of your birth control (ortho cyclen).

If you had sex before you started taking the antibiotic, you should be protected. If you don't get your period in the next couple of months after you stop taking the antibiotic, take a home pregnancy test. If it is negative, you are fine. If it is positive, make an appointment with your doctor to get a more accurate pregnancy test.

Dear Theresa,

I think that might be why you are experiencing these symptoms. Continue taking those pills as you normally would for the next three months of this new pack and see if those side effects stick around. If they do, make an appointment with your doctor and he/she might have to prescribe you to another pill.

It is very strange that CVS would dispense you a different brand of bcp almost every 3 months. Is your doctor changing your prescription every 3 months or is CVS dispensing a different bcp to you every 3 months and disregarding the prescription? I think it is very important you stay on the same pill going forward. Does your doctor know about CVS dispensing you a different brand of bcp every 3 months? This is definitely something your doctor needs to know.

Hi Theresa,

I think you should make an appointment and talk to your doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing. I'm not sure if starting the pills 4 days late could cause all these side effects you didn't experience before. Definitely talk to your doctor about your situation.

Hi,

I was put on metronidazole for a bacterial infection. My boyfriend and I had sex two days before I started the antibiotics (he did not ejaculate in me)and haven't had sex since. I am on ortho cyclen and I take it regularly. Could I still get pregnant?

Dear Jeny,

Don't worry, because this is the first time you are going on the pill, you may miss your first period because your body is adjusting to the pill. If you are worried, you can take a pregnancy test. You should get your period next month. If you still don't, make an appointment with your doctor.

I got my period October 16, 2011(sunday)-which was also the day I started my bc pills for the 1st time. This past Sunday started the last week in the pack......it is now Wednesday and my period hasnt started yet. When should I normally get it? Should I be worried? When should I take a pregnancy test?

Dear Annon,

This period will definitely be shorter if it has not stopped already due to you starting Tricyclen lo. The remainder of your periods will depend on how your body reacts to the pill because every girl experiences every pill differently.

Dear Rachel,

Sperm can live up to 4-5 days in your body. You can stop taking this pill tomorrow or the day after just in case. If you do not like this pill because of it's side effects, have you spoken to your doctor to learn about other options or pills? Not every pill gives you the same side effects and a lot of times the side effects go away after 3 months of being on the pill. If you have not been on this pill for more than 3 months, I would recommend you to stay on it to see if the side effects you are experiencing will go away. If you continue to experience the same side effects, you can try other pills or other contraceptive methods such as the ring, shot, patch, or implant.

If you would like to learn about other options, make an appointment with your doctor. If you decide to try another pill or method, doctor's usually get you to finish off this pack of pills you are currently using and then after your periods, start on the new pack of pill or contraceptive method for continued protection against pregnancy. This way, you can try out the new pill/contraceptive method and still stay protected!

Dear Laura,

Chances of getting pregnant is very high whenever you stop taking the pill. You started bleeding because you had stopped taking the pill and your body thinks it is time to get your period again. When you get your next period, start over with a brand new pack and make sure you do not miss any pills to ensure you are protected from pregnancy.

I had my 7 day break then took day one late. I then forgot to take days 5,6,7 pill as I had misplaced the pack. I had unprotected sex in these days. When I found my pill I took day 8 but then I started bleeding. Is there any chance of getting pregnant? I have now stopped the pack and waiting to start again on my next proper period.

Janine,

I am on the pill, but want to get off it immediately due to side effects that I am experiencing. I had sex with my boyfriend on Sunday, so four days ago. He pulled out. I am still taking the pill each day, because I am worried that even though he pulled out and I have been on the pill this whole time, that if I stop somehow I could get pregnant due to the possibiilty of sperm from pre-ejaculation last Sunday. How long should I keep taking this pill to make sure that I won't get pregnant from last Sunday? I know the chances are slim. And I really want to be off this pill!!

Thank you

Dear Molly,

Metronidazole is an antibiotic that will decrease the effectiveness of the pills. When you are on this medication, your birth control pill will be ineffective so it is advised to use back up contraception (ie. condoms or spermicide) during the period you are taking metronidazole. When your birth control pill is ineffective, you most likely will get your period. It is important that when your doctor is about to prescribe you to a medication, you let him/her know that you are on birth control so that he/she will prescribe you with a medication that will not decrease the efficacy of the birth control pill.

Hi,

I would just like to ask. I took a first pack of contraceptive pill 8 days ago and i was diagnose with BV or bacterial vaginitis and was given metronidazole. I would just like to ask if i can just stop the pills? If i stop the pills will it cause delay on my monthly period? I took the pill on my fertility day because i had unprotected sex.

Dear Sam,

As soon as you stop taking your birth control pills, you are at risk for becoming pregnant. To make sure you are not pregnant, you need to be taking birth control pills on a daily basis. Instead of stopping birth control altogether, your new doctor should have prescribed you to another birth control pill or another form of birth control that will not affect your blood pressure. Now that you are not on birth control pills, I would advise you to use a back up contraception such as a condom or spermicide.

When getting off the pill, your body needs to adjust to not having the birth control pill controlling your hormones. That could take awhile and you may have to wait for your next period, whenever that is. Meanwhile, use back up contraception (ie. condoms or spermicide) and if you are worried you did get pregnant from having sex 2 days after stopping the pill, take a pregnancy test. If it is negative then continue to wait for your period. If it is positive, make an appointment with your doctor to get a more accurate test done.

Dear Kerri12,

When you went on and off the pill your body is confused and that is probably why you are getting the breakthrough bleeding. If you are trying to conceive, give your body 3 months time to get back to its own rhythm again before you start trying.

Hi Sam,

I am not sure if she is pregnant. If she realizes in the next couple of months that she is not getting her period then you should get her a pregnancy test to see if she is pregnant. If the test is positive, make sure she makes an appointment with a doctor to get a more accurate pregnancy test. If the tests comes out negative, make sure you use back up contraception or any contraception (ie. condoms or spermicide).

I was recently told by my headache dr to stop taking my sugar pills and start a new package right before the sugar pills start. I have not yet gotten my menstrual and it is starting to scare me. Anyone have advice if i should just wait another month to see if it just has to fix itself or what?

Dear Jenny,

As soon as you stop taking the pill, chances of you becoming pregnant is very high. You can wait to see if you get your period next month. If you do, you are not pregnant. If you don't, take a home pregnancy test.

Dear a,

If you would like to get back on the pill, i would recommend you to wait for your period to come back, but since you are not getting your period you can just start it anytime just so your period will come at the end of the month. I would also recommend you to talk to your doctor about any questions you would have regarding the pill.

Hello, I was on different brands of BCP since the age of 19. I am now 25 and stopped taking the pill about 3 months ago because I thought perhaps it was causing mood swings and I wanted to see what my body's "baseline" was. I have not had a period since I stopped taking the pill... seem to be experiencing post BC amenorhhea. I only have protected sex, and have taken pregnancy tests at home, all of which have been negative. My question is whether it would be safe to restart the pill now? And would this most likely help my body to start cycling and make me have a period on my next inactive pill week? Although I know I'm not pregnant, I am stressed that I have not had a period!

Dear Amy,

I would recommend you to start your pills when your period comes. If you have your yearly GYN appointment scheduled, reschedule it for another day when you know you do not have your period.

Dear Cristina,

A little bit of spotting is normal for being on the pill for the first few months. You are supposed to get your period anytime during the week of your non active pills.

Dear Jolene,

As soon as you stop taking the pill, you will get your period and your risk of pregnancy increases to 50%. Your next real period may be a month from now but because you are stopping the pill, your body is trying to go back to it's original rhythm and it may be sooner or later than expected. Wait until your next period to find out if you are pregnant or not. If your period doesn't come a month from now, take the pregnancy test at home. If it is positive, make an appointment with your doctor to get another more accurate pregnancy test.

Hi,
I had took bcp ( meliane ) since June this year and had missed two pills in a row on 14 and 15 Aug. I took 2 pills on the next day but resume one on the subsequent day. I had withdrawal bleeding on the 16 and continue to take my bcp till 19 Aug (stopped completely) as I experienced headache and depression.. (I still left 6 active pills) I continue to have spotting from 16 Aug till now. I had sex with my husband on the 17 and 19 Aug. Is there a chance that I will get pregnant? It seems like my spotting is taking forever to clear and I'm not sure when I can estimate my real period to come as I'm TTC. I heard that without period, there's no ovulation. Is that true?

I've been on the pill for over 10 years, always some form of Tri-Cyclen. I ran out of pills and have been off of them for a month. My period is three days late and I've had bad cramps but no bleeding yet. I have a refill on my prescription and I want to get back on the pill. Should I wait for my period to come or can I just start taking my new pills on Sunday? To make matters worse I have my yearly GYN appointment on Wednesday which I can't have my period for.

Dear Nancy,

I would recommend you wait for your period and do the Sunday start (start it on the Sunday of your period.)

I started taking birth control (28 pack) last month the first time, and I started it on the first day of my period. After I finished the pack I didn't get my new pack until about two weeks after. I just wanted to know if I I have to wait for my period to start again, or can I start taking them when I get them?

Dear Sara,

Since you stopped taking the active pills, you have already gotten your period. I don't think you will have any withdrawal bleeding, but your body will go back to it's normal rhythm so hopefully you won't get your period for another month. Have a fun vacation!

Dear Maggie,

As soon as you stop taking birth control pills and have unprotected sex, there is a 50% chance that you are pregnant.

I was on loestrin fe for a month and had a normal period July 15-21. On July 31 I quit taking my BC pills, I was one week into month two. On August 2 I started to bleed and it lasted 5 days. My boyfriend and I had unprotected sex on August 7, is there a chance I might get pregnant?

Dear Jen,

You will probably have some bleeding after stopping the pill. Every girl reacts to stopping the pill differently so you will have to be prepared for another period if it may come. Your body is trying to adjust to the new pills and now trying to resume back to it's own rhythm. When starting a new pill, it is recommended that you stay on it for 3 months for the side effects to go away.

I went off the pill for a month after being on it for 11 years because my period just up and stopped. then i started a new pill after the month that i was off and only took it for 8 days and stopped because of side effects. so what i'm wondering is will i get a withdraw bleed in a couple days and then another period when i should have. and will my cycle come back to what it was before or will it be different now that i stoped the pill mid pack.

Dear Jaymie,

If you do not want to have your period during your vacation, then I would advise you to stay on the pack until your vacation is over. You are probably not liking how you feel on them because you just started on the pack and it takes 3 months for your body to get adjusted to it. Every girl reacts to the pill differently, especially if they are on the pill for less than a month. I would not recommend you to go on and off the pills because it will really throw off the hormones in your body. If you decide to go off the pills, you most likely will bleed. Again, every girl reacts to the pill differently, so you may or may not bleed again when you are supposed to have your period.

Hey there!
I stumbled across this website and thought id ask my question since everyone seemed to get answers quicky.
I had my last period June 14 (Thursday)and started the pill on a Sunday (Its my first month back on them I went off for a few months). Ive noticed mild cramping and I just dont like the way I feel on them, im about a week and a half into the package. If I stop now..Will I get my actual period within the next few days? or will I just spot and than get a normal period when its due? Im going on vacation and dont want "two" periods.I dont care about having it early aslong as I wont get it at my normal time as well. Thanks a bunch!!:)

Hi there,
I got my period June 14-18 thats before i started my bc pill. Then I decided to go on the pill. Now, my doctor recommended I take it on my first day so I got my period on July 11-15 and I took it on the first day which was the 11th now this is my first pack and everything! When will I expect to get my next period and will it all balance out after that when my periods come they will be on the week of the non active pills?

Abdominal pain (stomach pain) is a serious side effect and you must contact your doctor immediately. It may be caused by a serious disorder.

I decided to come off my pill in October 2010 as me and my husband were TTC. I have had no period since the 6th December 2010, visited my GP in February and he advised I come back in a few months if nothing happened.
My marriage has broken down recently so I restarted my pill 3 days ago, yesterday I had some bleeding and I have been awake all night with the most hurrendous stomach cramps (which I never normally get). Do I continue to take the pill and wait for the bleeding to stop? It really hurts!help!lol!

Dear Meme,

Every girl taking the pill for the first time reacts to the pill differently. Some will spot and some won't. This also depends on the pill you are on. You just have to go on it and find out for yourself. When you are on the pill, your period is not supposed to come while you are on the active pills, so you shouldn't be getting your period.

Dear annon,

Did you stop taking the active pills when you got your period? It's strange that your period came early, and you have been on the pill for 10 months. Did you miss any pills or go on antibiotics that may interact with your birth control?

Dear Maria,

Chances of you becoming pregnant is the highest when you are not taking your birth control pills but because you had unprotected sex while on the last pack, if you had diligently taken your pills on time every day since January you may be protected. To be sure, wait for your next period. If it comes, then you are definitely not pregnant. If it doesn't, go make an appointment with your doctor to get a more accurate test.

Dear Annon,

It doesn't matter which day you start taking your period. The reason why doctors suggest you take it on the first day of your period is because you do not have to take a pregnancy test before you start taking pills and to make sure your last period was normal. It also reduces your risk of becoming pregnant by shortening the interval between the two packs of pills giving you a lighter period and less menstrual pain.

I have been on the pill since January. I had my period on March 22nd while I was on the sugar pills and I had unprotected sex on the 25 when my period was gone (yes it was short). I was supposed to start the pills back on the 27 but I just stopped them. I went to the doctor on April 2nd because my knee was hurting and they took a urine test to check if I was pregnant to give me the prescription. It came out negative (well, they did not say anything so I guess it was). But I have read that it takes more time for you to know if you are pregnant by urine tests. What are my chances of being pregnant?

Dear Alexis,

I hope you are using some kind of protection after you have stopped using the pills. You are supposed to get a way lighter/shorter period while on loestrin 24 fe. Now that you have stopped the pill, your body is trying to get back to it's normal routine and so abnormal periods will occur after you stopped the pill. If you didn't use protection when you stopped the pill and had sex before you got your period and the times after as well, there is a very high chance you may be pregnant. Consult your doctor and get a pregnancy test from him to see if you are pregnant and if you are not, talk to him about alternative contraception such as the patch, shot, ring, implant or the IUD.

i started taking loestrin 24 fe on jan. 13, 2011. ive been having unprotected sex (as in my bf ejaculates inside me) since feb. 28. i havent really had a normal period and when i do have on it isnt red. its like a brownish color. only last about 3-4 days. my last recorded "period" or so i think it was, was on March. 7. ive been missing days. and i finally decided to stop taking them all together. so i would say i stopped around the 18-20 of march (dont really remember) and on the 21 of march i got cramps and a period followed, it was bright red. and i still have it. there are times when its red and then times when its brownish. its not a completely heavy flow but its there. my period usually lasts 6 days. whats going on? is this normal because i stopped taking the pill or can i be pregnant? i did have intercourse the day before i got the bright period, the day of and 4 days after, because i thought it went away and saw that it came back on the 27 of march. please help

Dear Elika,

During the time you stopped the pill, did you have unprotected sex? If you did, make an appointment with your doctor and take a pregnancy test. If it is positive, talk to your doctor about your options. If it is negative, discuss with your doctor to see why would you be having the pain and blood discharge.

I've been on Pills for 7 months now. I decided to stop the pill for a cycle last month; and started taking my new pack on Feb 3, the first day of my mens. Yesterday, I finished taking the last pill.

Since last week, however, I've been experiencing light pains on my lower abdomen, tissue and blood discharge occasionally during day (which could be also the signs of pregnancy). I've heard that chances of one becoming pregnant becomes considerably high once the pill is stopped being taken for even cycle. I haven't missed any pill since the beginning of my cycle and I'm first day starter, but now I'm starting to fear that the pill may not have had its effect. I should mention that I didn't change the brand of the pill.

Dear Claire,

Are you sure that the side effects you are experiencing are from the pill? New side effects do not just appear after being on the pill for 8 years, it is usually caused by something else. Are you taking any other medication? Coming on and off the pill will not cause side effects to getting pregnant in the future but I would highly suggest you go speak to your doctor about your concerns and the reasons why you are thinking of coming off the pill. Make sure you tell your doctor about your entire medical history and all the medications you have taken in the past and present.

I have been on the pill for about 8 years. I started at 15 because of abnormal periods. I am now 23 and I'm experiencing negative side effects (high BP, weight gain, moderate depression, and fatigue). I would like to go off the pill and see if my side effects go away and if my periods return to normal.
My concern is if I go off the pill, then want to return to it in a year or so, would this have any negative side effects to getting pregnant in the future? I don't plan on getting pregnant any time soon, but I'm concerned since I've been on the pill for so long I will have problems getting pregnant or miscarrying?

Dear Nicole,

You don't have to wait until the end of your period. You can start it whenever. The reason doctors tell you to start at the end of your period because that way you will get your period the same time that you normally do.

Recently I missed a pack of my pills that I have been taking for almost three years and it has been about a month and half and I just got my period yesterday. So I took the first pill of my pack yesterday and the second today. But I was wondering if I did that correct by treating it like when I first started taking the pills or should I have waited and taken them when it was the end of my period?

But I was wondering if I did that correct by treating it like when I first started taking the pills or should I have waited and taken them when it was the end of my period?

Dear mzxpablo,

Once you stop the pill, chances of you getting pregnant is 50/50, unless you are using another type of birth control. Your period may be a bit abnormal for a bit after you stop the pill because your body is getting used to getting back on it's own rhythm and that includes your own natural hormones which is what controls your period. Speak to a doctor if you are worried about getting pregnant and he/she should be able to help you look for other signs of pregnancy.

I have stopped the pill two months ago. Got my periods for a month after and now its late. Is there any chance I could be pregnant? I heard of the old blood bleeding after you stop your pill, but it was three weeks to a month until my full blown bleeding came on. The last time I had stopped the pills it only tool me a few days to let out all the old blood. What should I do?

Dear benz,

When you miss two pills in a row, you will start breakthrough bleeding. Once you finish the pack you will have a real period and when you start your next pack there should be no more bleeding. The breakthrough bleeding may stop earlier depending on how far you are in your pack. Every girl is a little different. You just have to wait it out sometimes.

Dear Virginia,

Whenever you stop taking the pills you will get your period again, even though you just had your period last week because when you were on birth control during those 5 days, your body starts absorbing the pills and how the pill works is that as long as you are taking the active pills, you will not get your period, but once you stop taking them or are taking non active pills, that is when your period is supposed to come. Since you are sexually active, it is recommended for you to stay on the pill. The first 3 month of being on the pill may be a little difficult depending on how your body reacts to the pill (ie. the side effects that you experience) because your body is getting use to the pill. But after the initial 3 months has passed these side effects should go away. If you are not ready to have children, birth control is definitely something that you should be thinking about. If you do not like the pill, there are other alternatives such as the nuvaring, the patch, the shot, etc. Meet with your doctor to find out about other birth control methods other than the pill.

Hope to hear from you. Do i need some prescription?

Dear TTC,

Every girl who stops taking birth control reacts to the lack of hormone control differently. Some girls get back to their normal menstrual cycle right away, while others take 3-4 months or longer for it to go back to normal. Since you are trying to conceive, it is recommended for you to wait 6 months before you should try to conceive.

You may be bleeding on a Tuesday for one of two reasons. One, you may be back to normal on your menstrual cycle, but just to confirm that you are wait a couple more months to see if your period always comes back on a Tuesday, if it does then you are back to normal, if not then obviously you have to wait a few months for your body to get adjusted to not taking BCPs. Two, you may be bleeding on a Tuesday because you stopped your BCPs and whenever a girl stops her BCP's, you will get your period very soon and in your case, coincidentally it's Tuesday. Either way, you will still need to wait at least a few months to see if you are back to normal or if you need a few months to get back on your normal non BCP routine.

Try to track it on a calendar so you have all the events recorded starting from 9-14 (Tuesday). Goodluck :)

My husband and I are TTC. I stopped my birth control pills Saturday(9-11) I was at the end of my pack... I only had one left. Is it possible that I'm already back on my normal menstrual cycle? Before I started BCP my period always came on a Tuesday. Well today is Tuesday 9-14 and I'm bleeding pretty heavy. Is this breakthrough bleeding or my period?

Dear madd,

Every girl who come off the pill will experience different symptoms. Sometimes, the cramps could be from something else. Check with your doctor to see if it can be anything else or if it is the pill causing it. Make sure you mention about you and your family medical history, any current medication you are taking, etc.

Dear Anonymous,It is normal for you to miss you period on the first month of taking the pill. Your body is trying to get used to the pill and missing your period on the first month of being on the pill is very common. You should keep your doctor informed about when you miss your period. Definitely let your doctor know if you miss your period again.

Dear Anonymous,Stay on the pill. If you stay on the pill, there is a chance your period would go away. If you get off it, you period will come for sure. Are you on any antibiotics? If you are, that may be a factor of why you are experiencing breakthrough bleeding.

I don't know if this belongs here, but I'm going to ask anyway.I want to stop taking the pill and I'm on my last week before I get my period. I still want to have sex with my boyfriend though. Would it still be safe to have sex without a condom while being on the last week, or should we start using a condom? I ask because I've heard that sperm can last up to 5 days in your vagina. And if that's true, I don't want to get pregnant.

Dear Anonymous,You need to go see a doctor and let him/her know about the depression side effect you have experienced and see what other birth control they will recommend you. Also, mention to your doctor about the bleeding you have been having to see what your doctor can recommend you.

I stopped taking levora over a month ago after being on it for almost a year, as it made me depressed. I had my period at the end of the pack and spotted for a few days. Started my period again three weeks later and it stopped 8 days later. Had protected sex 2 days later and I started to bleed and haven't stopped. It's been almost a week.is this normal?

Dear Anonymous,Based on your example, I would go see a doctor to see what he/she would recommend me to do. Your doctor should be able to give you different options.

What if I start taking birth control but decide to stop taking it for awhile and start taking it again..how will it effect me?For example lets say I want to have sex so I start taking it but I know I am going to be apart from my partner for an extended period of time but know that before they come back I will want to start taking it again.

Dear Anonnymous,If you start your birth control on the first day of your period, and you have never taken birth control before, you are protected on the very first day. But, because it is the first time you are using birth control, you are most likely going to miss a pill so back up contraception such as condoms is highly recommended to prevent pregnancy. If you start your birth control any other day, you should wait until your period to start having sex. Again, always use a nonhormonal backup contraceptive like a condom for extra protection. Birth Control pills do not protect you against HIV/AIDS or sexually transmitted diseases.
