Researchers in the University of North Carolina are pushing for further research into the new idea that an ultrasound can be used as a reversible contraceptive for men. The idea is that a blast of ultrasound to the testes may be able to stop sperm production for approximately six months. Once the sperm production has been stopped, all the sperm in the sperm reserves must be used up before this contraceptive method is effective.

This would offer another method of birth control for couples. It is thought that these sperm impeding ultrasounds would be affordable to most people. The plan in the long-term for the University team is to use an ultrasound from instruments found in sports medicine or physical therapy clinics. One of the best things about this contraceptive method is that it is thought that the sperm production will continue as normal after the approximate six months of infertility is up.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sponsored this research with a $100,000 grant (one of seventy-eight grants by this foundation). This financial help will support the pursuing of clinical trials to prove this method. One warning issued about this contraceptive is that although it will prevent pregnancy (if it is proven), it will not protect against the transmissions of STI’s.

There’s been ongoing interest over the possibility of a male contraceptive. Every few years a new discovery appears and it convinces us that we are closer to a birth control pill for men. For the first time, a safe, reversible, and effective male contraceptive has become a reality. Within the near future, several types of male birth control may become available to the average man. Soon men will be able to have the same options as women including a daily birth control pill, a patch or gel applied to the skin, and injection given every three months, or an implant under the skin every twelve months.

Seattle researchers claim that the availability of male contraceptives depends on how funding continues. The technology is available and it is understood how a hormonal male contraceptive will work.

Sure, this may be a great thing for women – we no longer have to remember the pill or suffer from awful side effects – but when you really think about it, a male contraceptive might not be such a good thing.

1. A new excuse to get you into bed – Some men might use male contraceptives as an excuse to get in your pants. The same men that lie about pulling out will lie about being on the pill.

2. Will they remember to take it – If you can’t trust your man to remember to pick up milk on the way home or buy condoms when you run out, how will you know if he remembered to take the pill?

3. An increase in STIs – Its been speculated that the approval of a male contraceptive might increase the spread of sexually transmitted infections. The pill won’t protect you from STIs – and if you’re both on the pill, why would you need a backup condom?

4. Decreased pregnancy rates – By putting men in control, couples may not be getting married having children as early in life. Women tend to want children more than men and they want to “move forward” in relationships. Men forget that the main reason for sex is procreation. There’s no telling whether or not men will even use a hormonal contraceptive, however its safe to say – don’t trust a man to do a woman’s job.

New Male Contraceptive as Reliable as Condoms

Though condoms are said to be roughly 98 percent effective if used properly and consistently, many men know that things can go wrong, and the condom may fail. Be this by breaking or the condom slipping off, the effectiveness in the “real world” isn’t as high as many manufacturers would have you believe. Some men try to use the “withdrawal” tactic, where the man attempt to pull out before ejaculating. This is one of those things that you should NOT do. Additionally, there is the option for the man to have a vasectomy, but many men can’t bring themselves to “take the plunge” so to speak.

However, now there may be another option for men that would allow them to take on part of the responsibilities of birth control. Chinese researches tested a male contraceptive shot, which is injected monthly into the buttocks. The contraceptive, which is a form of testosterone, temporarily blocks sperm production. The study found that the contraceptive was 99 percent effective, and only had a failure rate of only 1.1 per 100 men.

Additionally, the contraceptive shot is convenient. The shot is administered once a month, but then saves the awkward, last minute fumbling in the dark trying to find and put on a condom. Males and females alike can definitely appreciate this.

The best thing about the shot may be the fact that it is only a temporary birth control and after 6 months of stopping injections, all but two of the 1045 men tested

had their reproductive function return to normal range.

The most difficult obstacle to pass for men is trying to get their significant other to trust them to have their shot. Even though many men are very willing to take this contraceptive shot, many women are doubtful that these men will be motivated enough to go and receive a shot every month. Either way, you may need to wait some time for this new form of birth control to hit the market, due to the need for long-term testing. When this product finally does emerge onto the open market it will be interesting to see what the response is.

In 1997, a survey commissioned by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, an American health research and education organization, found that sixty-six percent of those surveyed felt that men should have a larger role and more choice when it comes to the use of contraception. However, after forty years of research, it appears as though men will finally be able to have more options and more control over their contraception.
Since the debut of the female oral contraceptive pill in the 1960′s, women have had the option o f a reversible, effective, and safe form of birth control, and now researchers say that men will soon be able to have that same option. Much like female birth control where hormones, progestins, and estrogen are used to cease egg production, male birth control will work in a similar fashion where progestins and testosterone are used to stop sperm production.

What Forms of Male Birth Control Will There Be?

Within the next few years, men should have the option to take male birth control via a variety of methods including:

taking a pill orally
using a patch
applying a skin gel
having an injection
having an implant inserted

Will Men Accept It?

Many wonder how successful these male contraceptive options will be; not just in terms of terminating sperm production, but also in how men will receive them once they are widely available. As testing would indicate, side effects have been minimal when using the male birth control pills and injections, so it would come down to whether men are willing to accept more responsibility when it comes to birth control.
At this point, only time will tell how men will receive these new contraceptives designed specifically for them. Whether they are accepted or not, within the next few years, at least they will have the option.
