About Yasmin 21 days

Yasmin is known as a combination pill. It is available in 21 and 28 - day schedule. Each of the first 21 pills contains the same amount of estrogen and progestin. The last seven pills, commonly called "reminder" pills, contain no active ingredients and are there to keep you in the routine of taking Yasmin every day. In the 21 day pack, once you finish your 21 pills, you will have a pill free week where you will get your period for 7 days. Once those 7 days are over, you start your next pack.

Drospirenone (found in Yasmin) is a synthetic hormone that mirrors the behavior of the progesterone hormone your body produces during menstruation. The major function of the progesterone hormone is to remove the water that is retained by your body during your cycle. By taking Yasmin with drospirenone, you will retain less water, drastically reducing your discomfort that can make you feel so uncomfortable in the second half of your menstrual cycle.

The estrogen part of Yasmin tricks your body into thinking it is pregnant so that it doesn't release an egg. The progestin prevents ovulation. Yasmin also thickens your cervical mucus to stop any movement of sperm. The cervical mucus acts as a backup to prevent pregnancy even if an egg is released. These methods help to prevent fertilization.

If taken correctly on a daily basis, Yasmin is as much as 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, but there is still a 1% chance that you could get pregnant. Furthermore, missing a pill or taking a pill a few hours later than normal can decrease the effectiveness. Certain medications like antibiotics are also known to increase the chance of Yasmin failing.
