It is even debatable that the risk of developing VTE is worth the benefits that the pill provides. In addition to preventing pregnancy combination birth control pills can lower your risk of developing endometrial cancer, and reduce dysfunctional uterine bleeding, reduce acne, control menstrual periods, and reduce the symptoms of PMS. It is estimated that over 40,000 women in the United States will develop endometrial cancer this year, compared to the strongly age dependent VTE that will occur in 8-10 women in 10,000. All methods of birth control have their own set of risks and benefits. If you are concerned about your risks while taking birth control, don’t be hesitant to ask your doctor. You can’t rely on what you see on TV or hear from others when it comes to choosing the right form of contraceptive for you.

I have to disagree completely with the notion that birth control pills (especially combo pills) are safe. They are not as safe as we make them out to be. I am 26 years old and had been on combo pills for 8 years. As soon as I got off the pills my gallbladder failed and I had pancreatic and liver issues that followed.
I went from being an extremly healthly (perfect weight, perfect overall health, non-smoker, non-drinker, studying to be a dietician) to having my body complely colapse within a month. Every single one of my doctors said my issues were casued from the bc pills. The hormones had screwed up my body so badly that when I stop taking them my digestive organs had the equivillent of a heartattack. It has taken me two years to get my body back on track. Along my jouney, I meet many other women who suffered similar if not worse things than me from the combo pills. The long term consequences of the pill need to be studied further. While there is a lot of mis-information about the pill out there, not every negative thing is made up. Real women are dealing with real issues from these pills everyday. Do your research, listen to your body and talk to others.
